Veyder-Malberg

Weitenberg Grüner Veltliner 2017

S Butterfield
9.7

Ethereal (circa 1510): of the highest regions of the atmosphere; (from 1590s) an extended sense of light or air. In a boxing match, this featherweight Veyder-Malberg will light you up. In the mountains, it’s the stone you sick and the air you breathe at the solitude of 11,000 feet. — a month ago

Alban Vineyards

Reva Alban Estate Vineyard Syrah 2004

Wow! So, happy Father’s Day everyone. I was blinded on this tonight. When a bit over-chilled it screamed Northern Rhône Syrah to me. All I got was olive tapenade and an animal blood quality. As it warmed I had to take a step back. It began to come alive in a way that took me from the Rhône to Bordeaux to Howell Mountain cab franc. As it became a bit too warm it lead me to new world cab franc, circa 2014. After the reveal, and back with a properly chilled glass, holy moly. Still with that olive tapenade/salinity, dark fruit, coffee. But the shear concentration remaining in this after 16 years is incredible. There is a tannic backbone, but in a way that plays second-fiddle to the flavor profile. One could ruminate over a glass of this wine for hours. — 4 months ago

Château Clos L'Eglise

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

I have a history with this wine as it was an early love for me circa 1999 off a wine list at Aureole (the original Aureole). In haven’t had it in almost as many years and so a I grabbed a few bottles of 09. I don’t drink a lot of Bordeaux anymore but this seems to display more earth and less fruity to me than I expected. Bold alcohol content. Still showing some sharp edges. I like this wine but my 25 year old self had a very different palate. — a year ago

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Circa J.L. Chave Sélection Saint-Joseph Roussanne 2016

The aromatics are insane. Floral and fruit jumps from the glass. Blueberry. Honeysuckle. Bright and lovely. The body is substantial and requires food. Thick and rich. Opening took over 45mins. — 2 months ago

Vini Conestabile della Staffa

Cantina Conestabile Magione Case Parse Umbria Bianco Grechetto 2018

SIGHT: A thick golden yellow with some sediment. SMELL: Dat barn lifeeeee! Yeasty, like the dying sourdough starter I tried to make. TASTE: Pithy, bitter, baby powder; star fruit. Citrus rinds. Salinity. Dusty hazy sun rays hitting an old wood floor built circa 1500s. After breathing for a bit it tastes juicier and less bitter. Silky. Tender. And haaaaaai some farm floor flavoring. (Love) Light medium body. Delicious acidity. — 6 months ago

Clos Pegase

Mitsuko's Vineyard Chardonnay 2014

The Clos Pegase label features Pegasus, painted circa 1890 by the French artist Redon. Pale lemon with aromas of fresh fruit and floral scents. On the palate apple and melon flavors, creamy with pronounced oak and citrus notes. Medium finish, good balance ending with fruit and oak character. The ‘17 tasting well. Good value! We just tasted beside an ‘18 Stags Leap, Pegase won, and it’s $5 cheaper!! Nice!! — 2 months ago
