2015 Argentine Malbec

Isenhower Cellars

Á Bloc Malbec 2015

Dense purple red, highly extracted pigment, some sediment in suspension. Butter, purple fruit and flowers in nose, blackberry, thyme, sage, slight cigar box. Velvety blackberry texture and flavor in mouth, slightly bitter and alcoholic on finish initially. After 30 minutes, chewy tar finish emerges with moderate astringency and a touch of menthol. A serious robust wine, but that Washington State fruit flavors and herbal nose sneak through. 106 cases produced — 5 days ago

Expressive nose of primary aromas, blueberries, cassis, wonderful texture with sweet tannins and length. A delight — 16 days ago

Familia Zuccardi

Concreto Mendoza Malbec 2015

1st of 3 Mendoza Malbecs for NYT Wine School. Uco Valley, high altitudes, calcarean soil, fermented in concrete eggs. Medium/deep purple, blackberry and mint on the nose. Blackberry, plum, boysenberry, mint, pepper, and minerals on the palate. Needed a lot of time to open up. Some alcohol burn. It’s good and well made but doesn’t change my overall impression that Malbecs are kind of boring. — 23 days ago

Carmelo Patti

Lujan de Cuyo Malbec 2015

Baked cherries with subtle pepper and spice on the nose. Very nicely balanced on the palate. Might almost think it’s a California Zinfandel. Will get more as soon as possible. Great deal for $35. Loved it. — 7 days ago

La Posta

Tinto Red Blend 2015

Great with homemade margarita pizza and pizza with pesto, chicken sausage, artichokes, red pepper and sun-dried tomato. La Posta is a winery created largely through the efforts of Laura Catena, a member of Argentina's unofficial wine royalty. TA classic Argentine blend of Malbec, Bonarda, and Syrah, it really showcases the beauty of the flavors these grapes offer. It is not tannic, showing smooth, soft fruitiness and only a touch of oak. Aromas of red cherries and raspberries are infused with mocha and spice hints that give up the secret for what’s about to come. Let this wine breathe before your first sip, so the first sip washes broadly across your palate like a flood of sweet, fresh fruit and a vibrant and long finish. The hints of baking spice and some oak keep the fruit flavors fresh and lively. This is a wine that you’ll want to stack up in your wine rack (or closet) for any occasion. Great all by itself or with all your favorite red wine foods like burgers, ribs, lamb chops, and even pizza. – Surdyks — 15 days ago
