Château Pontet-Canet

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

Delectable Wine
9.3

The bottle of 2014 Pontet-Canet showed better than the previous one at the 10-Year-On tasting in London. This offers much more restraint on the nose. It's quite precise, with greater mineralité seeping through the black cherry and cassis fruit. The palate has a sorbet-fresh entry, fine tannins and a silky sheen. The oak is fully subsumed after a decade, plus there is a little more depth on the finish compared to previous showings. This is a fine example of the vintage, and bottles should drink well over the next 12 to 15 years. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the Pontet-Canet dinner in Washington DC. Château Montrose

Saint-Estèphe Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2010

Delectable Wine
9.9

The 2010 Montrose is one of the highlights of the Icons of Bordeaux dinner. It has a show-stopper nose with powerful, intense, mineral-rich black fruit, becoming quite floral with aeration. Potpourri hints complement tobacco notes. The palate is fresh, vibrant and weighty, yet paradoxically, it has wonderful finesse. There is a symmetry about this Montrose, coupled with a tremendous length that leaves you wanting more. Brilliant. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the Icons of Bordeaux dinner at Legacy Records in New York. (Neal Martin, Vinous, May 2024)

Chateau Montelena

The Montelena Estate Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Medium to full bodied with nicely balanced tannins and acid, this wine was very drinkable but still young and could be held for many more years. More sediment than I expected with flavors of cherries, mocha, and eucalyptus. — 11 days ago

Château Mouton Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

1982 vintage. Above average fill. Cork 98% saturated. Decanted and throwing a mix of chunky and sandy sed. Tasted after 15 minutes. Dark-fruited nose. Still medium body. Any overt fruit is gonzo and this specimen ended up as more muscular than remembered with notable balance. Tannic skeleton definitely in place. Least favorite 1st growth overall but this was a great showing. In a sweet spot currently and likely to hold here without drop off for another 4-5 years. 6.1.24. — 14 days ago

Cantina Ar.Pe.Pe.

Riserva Vigna Regina Sassella Valtellina Superiore Nebbiolo 2017

At Pesach so glassware was hit and miss. Lots of miss.
This is consistently a marvel of high altitude, no toast(steamed)barrel, various wood Nebbiolo.
After 10-15 mins open the nose is like the most intense, ethereal fraises de bois. Intermingled with fine rocks and wood. Bright!
On the palate, it’s redolent of high altitude tiny berries, transparent and lively, gripping your lower front gums with a hint of licorice.
The only issue may be finding the generosity to share it.

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

Great structure, complex and delicious. Could still use a few more years of ageing but not complaining - it is a Cos afterall. — 15 days ago

Marchesi Antinori

Tignanello Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 2016

Nice but not quite at the true top level, especially given the price. Decanted 4 hours which is necessary at this point. Nice pairing with a big T-bone steak cooked in the Tuscan style. Could use more acid on the finish. Probably needs a few years to come together. — 7 days ago

Château Léoville Barton

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2004

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2004 Léoville Barton is less opulent on the nose than the Langoa but offers a little more refinement and terroir expression. A touch of seaweed develops with time. The palate is fresh on the entry. It is one of the most saline Léoville Barton that gets the saliva flowing. It is classic old-school Anthony Barton with a judicious dab of black pepper and menthol furnishing the finish. Excellent. (Neal Martin, Vinous, June 2024)
