Thorn By The Prisoner Winery

The Prisoner Wine Company

The Prisoner Napa Valley Zinfandel Blend 2016

Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Strong nose of black fruits with cedar, vanilla, leather, spices, earth, chocolates and black pepper.

Full-bodied with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and very fruity on the palate with black currants, black plums, blackberries, cooked cherries, light green vegetables, spices, pencil lead and peppercorn.

Long finish with soft tannins and tangy cherries.

This 10 year old red blend from California is still drinking beautifully. Complex and interesting. Nice to see that it aged nicely.

Showing slight RS on the palate, but I can live with that.

Easy drinking and good by itself as a sipping wine.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Charbono.

15.2% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$60.

The Prisoner Cabernet Sauvignon

Pepper, strawberries, red licorice on the nose. Vanilla, plum, and citrus on the taste. Paired nicely with charcuterie and dark chocolate. I bought, I think if I cellar the other for another year or two, it would be great. — 5 months ago

Headlock Charbono Blend 2018

9.2

Second time tasting this 2018 bottling. Four years on, the 2018 Headlock has softened and found better harmony. The once dense core has relaxed, with plum, blackberry compote, and blueberry giving way to dark cherry, cocoa, and gentle smoke. The flamboyant Prisoner richness remains, but tannins are more polished and the sweet spice better integrated. Acidity also softens but still has enough to lift the palate. A lot to like here.

Want to sell wine? Put a provocative picture on the bottle and come up with an exciting story! Share it religiously. Wine can be good. Worked for Orin; decades later we’re still talking about Prisoner and many others he created. Cheers. — a year ago

Tried two of their more current releases, 21 Russian River & 21 Crown Gap and this 2017 Thorn Ridge from Magnum. Always consistent, solid Pinots from KB. Paired well with the Duck.

At Pebble Beach Food & Wine 2025.

The ticket to this event has a pretty big price tag. But when you consider what a Napa etc. tasting or two and lunch would cost you, you are pretty much there and there is so much more than that. It ends up having great value. It’s wine, spirits and food candy land.

Cuttings California Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2018

Bold red color, ruby at the edges fade to dark deep red in the middle of the glass. Earthy off the nose. Big taste, super smooth finish and extremely drinkable. Drink now, or 10 years from now, this is great! — 5 years ago
