Man O' War Vineyards

Dreadnought Waiheke Island Syrah 2012

Mid to deep crimson in colour. Aromas of red berries, a little oak, a bunchie stalky note, spices including nutmeg and a dash of chocolate. Medium plus bodied quite northern Rhone in style more than SA. Not dissimilar to another excellent North Island Syrah as in Trinity Hill, Hawkes Bay. Very good, very tasty. From the unlikely destination of Waiheke Island which is in the middle of Auckland Harbour, which is massive in area compared to Sydney Harbour. One would think the rainfall might be a little high for quality viticulture but not so. Also when you think that one of the best new world Chardonnays in Kumeu River is made just to the north of Auckland. — 3 years ago

Been to Waiheke Island to visit Kennedy Point where they used to make outstanding Syrah (and other reds)

@ESF Fun fact about Waiheke Island You might recall that Tiger Woods had a New Zealand caddy for many years. When Tiger got married and almost at the height of his popularity he had part of his honeymoon on Waiheke Island so I was told by locals. Great for the privacy - organised by the caddy.

Torbreck Vintners

The Struie Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

Can’t come to Aus and not drink Torbreck. The Struie is a great QPR wine, and the 2017 is drinking really well. Tons of spice. Less juicy than most Torbrecks but tons of sweetness and tobacco, leather yet really well made. Nice glass ahead of lesser wines in Chinatown in Sydney — 4 years ago

Bodegas Roda

Reserva Rioja Tempranillo 2005

A rich crimson in colour. Subdued dusty plummy notes. On the palate savoury plum with earthy notes - mellow and soft with totally resolved Tannins - medium plus to profound intensity - at its peak I haven’t had many aged Riojas but this was a beautiful wine. Delicious with teriyaki lamb at China Doll restaurant, Sydney. — 4 years ago

Corton GC Rouge

Should be too early. It’s not. This wine is insane right now, ridiculously well balanced; it will probably get better but I doubt it’s a 30 year wine. — 3 years ago

Chalkers Crossing

Cc2 Hilltops Shiraz 2014

Contrary to my last note, this IS my last bottle of 2 dozen. Mid Ruby in colour. Dark ripe cherries with a little pepper on both nose and palate. Can see why this wine has won 13 Trophies on the Australian Show Circuit including 5 at Royal Sydney. Ridiculous value at $22 or less. So easy to drink. Made by French winemaker Celine Rousseau in the cool climate Hilltops District near Young NSW. Wish I had more. — 4 years ago
