Salon

'S' Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil Brut Chardonnay 2004

This is probably the youngest vintage I’d drink Salon as they age at a snails pace. Much more to offer at this point than 06 and 07. Swirls in a Burgundy glass reveal its amazing purity, intense minerality, chiseled palate and an incredible sense of place. It’s elegant and concentrated with a stunning texture and mouthfeel, offering plenty to be enjoyable now, but many many years ahead. — 2 years ago

Montepeloso

Gabbro Toscana Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Delectable Wine
9.8

The 2016 Gabbro, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, is one of the most compelling wines I have ever tasted from Montepeloso. In most prior vintages, Gabbro has been rich and concentrated, but the 2016 flows with a sense of total refinement. Wild flowers, herbs, licorice, lavender, graphite and spice add myriad shades of dimension to a core of dark, beautifully resonant fruit. A wine of real gravitas and structure, the 2016 is going to require a number of years to be at its best, but it is stunning, even in the early going. In fact, I am simply blown away by how integrated it already is. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, March 2020)

Julia's Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2021 Pinot Noir Julia's Vineyard is laced with crushed red berry fruit. Spice, tobacco and mint are some of the notes that grace this expressive, nuanced Pinot. The 2021 was done with fully destemmed fruit, but there is a sense of savoriness here that is quite attractive. $25.00 (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, November 2023) — 6 months ago

Clos De La Roilette

Clos de la Roilette Fleurie Gamay 2017

2017. I’ve been looking for an excuse to try this bottle and an article recommending Cru Beaujolais as a pairing with chicken and sausage gumbo made sense and worked great! Gulpable dark cherry juice with mild tannins that were only really noticeable after dinner. — 3 years ago

Domaine Philippe Charlopin-Parizot

En Montchenevoy Marsannay Pinot Noir 2002

JKT
9.2

Really nice mature Marsannay with good color and nose of flowers and perfume underlined by earthy structure and autumn forest. A surprising sense of sweetness reflecting very ripe fruits mixed in with all that older Burg goodness on palate. Long finish. What a nice wine! — 4 years ago

Fattoria Poggio di Sotto

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2016

Delectable Wine
9.7

It's such a pleasure to taste the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Poggio di Sotto; this is easily one of the wines of the vintage. Its bouquet is pure class, balsamic, exotic and spicy. A blend of dried orange and cloves gives way to sweet lavender and black cherries. Elegant and silky, yet with cooling acidity and depths of tart red berry fruits, the 2016 impresses further with a salty savoriness and a sense of sheer energy. It leaves a coating of dusty tannins and dark florals to resonate, displaying a youthful concentration slowly easing as traces of licorice fade through the incredibly long finish. Château Bellefont-Belcier

Grand Cru Classe St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

Don’t drink or buy Bordeaux’s very much at all any longer. I guess escalating prices and folks dropping out of a futures buying group I was in ended interest in Bordeaux. I still have a bunch left to drink with some back to 1982 and 2005 being the last vintage. Buying Bordeaux now at my age does not make sense having to keep them cellared for at least 10 to 15 years before drinking.

Anyway, very enjoyable wine with a lot of black fruits, licorice, herbs and a bit of green pepper and earthiness in nose and taste. Very nice long finish. I decanted the wine about 2 hours before we sat down to a Bibou take out lamb dinner.
