Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2010

2010 vintage (half bottle). Upon opening, there was a split second hesitation as to whether the wine was skunked or not. Extremely earthy and funky nose though the taste and color assured that it was fine, though it surely needed a ton of time to come together. We enjoyed a Chenin Blanc while we waited for the Rioja. Revisiting the nose about 45 minutes later, it was clear the time alone improved it immensely. Alas, the classic notes of vanilla and oak and cherry that I so often associate with Rioja. Drinking it 20 minutes later over the next hour, the wine was showing incredibly well and so different from its previously unruly and spastic self. It was now much more tame and finessed, well integrated tannins yet still present, with nice acidity and a good amount of freshness. Incredibly enjoyable all on its own. A fun journey that had a rocky beginning but very rewarding end. — 9 months ago

Poiré Granit 2019

OMG…too many forms of tasty alcohol to stick with wine or beer. This 5% formented fruit juice is absolutely delicious. Tart, crisp, lively juicy drink from Normandy… this stuff rocks! Note to self….arrive at the amount you think you need… then double it. Apple, nutmeg, cream, lemon pulp, but the lightness is absolutely addictive. — 3 years ago

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

Like it. Like it a lot. About as happy likable a second label can be. Not always the case with Seconds. (Note to self: with a few more in the cellar…Drink Up.) — 2 years ago

Gaudium Vinum Galos

Burgenland Trocken St. Laurent

So…without knowing what kind of grape this was when I tasted it and fell in love, I can truly say that I may have to give Pinot Noir a second chance. Although this is a full bodied wine, it has a light, silky smooth finish. The tannins just wrap right around your palate perfectly. I didn’t know anything about the St. Laurent grape so I confess I had to google it. This is an Austrian wine where the crossing of the Pinot Noir grape marries an unknown grape producing this beauty. Paired very nicely with my salmon last night and is just as delicious on the second day. - Sandy’s Shack Imported Wine and Beer — 2 years ago

Second bottle is even better. Sour Brett character is more integrated. Tons of lime, lime zest, sea salt, tropical fruit with papaya. Just outstanding but still very sour. — 4 years ago

Dog Point Vineyard

Marlborough Chardonnay 2018

First bottle of three that I bought on release - the 2018 Chardonnay from Dog Point in Marlborough. I’ve had this wine once before, a couple of years ago - the 2011 - which was superb.

This 2018 has a young appearance, greenish yellow in hue, Chablis-like.

Highly reductive on the first night with a strong herbal edge; much more open and harmonious on the second. Flint, wet shale, lemon, orange peel.

The palate is lean, energetic and super high in acidity, with prevailing flavours of lemon and lime, Braeburn apple and only the faintest hint of any lactic notes. It finishes quite long, but it’s bracing, taut and youthful at present. I expect this to age quite well and will pull my next bottle in three years (note to self!).

Union Sacré

Belle de Nuit Central Coast Gewürztraminer 2019

Chasing my chaotic self-administered pandemic hair chopping with a Gewurtz from Arroyo Seco which seems to me apropos as I imagine the region as wind-swept and tousled. This wine is not so much and that is a good thing. All is in harmony. There is just the right amount of everything and it hits you in order—the lychees are followed by a green lawn leading to the flower garden full of roses and gardenias all spirited along by a nice amount of acid and powered by a prickling tannin. I’m not normally the biggest Gewurtz fan but I’d reach for this a second time. I’d maybe even pair it with a “hard to pair” thing like artichoke. Something about the floral nature of both I think could line up. Is that crazy? Maybe. But this is coming from someone who just used her kitchen scissors to give herself an intentionally asymmetrical haircut. — 4 years ago
