Domaine A. et P. de Villaine

Bouzeron Aligoté 2019

Burgundy 🇫🇷 is renowned for its Chardonnay, but did you know that Aligoté is the second most planted white grape in the region? 👀

Some of the finest Aligoté comes from ‘Bouzeron,’ an appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise region (north of Mâconnais, south of Côte d’Or).

In a land of Pinot Noir & Chardonnay, Bouzeron AOC is 100% dedicated to producing Aligoté 🙌🏻. In fact, it first became a legally-recognized AOC in 1998 thanks in part to the efforts of Aubert de Villaine, the winemaker behind this beautiful bottle. 👏🏻

Interestingly, Aubert is also a co-owner & co-Director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) (and, as an aside, was on the tasting panel for the 1976 Judgement of Paris 😆)…

Yet, instead of devoting himself exclusively to DRC — one of the world’s most famous and prestigious estates — he and his wife, Pamela (a California native), were enchanted by the possibilities of Aligoté, and terroir of Bouzeron, where they put down roots through “Domaine de Villaine”.

This wine is Domaine de Villaine Bouzeron AOC (2019). It has a shimmering lemon robe and bouquet of white blossom, just-ripe white peach, yellow apple, pear, citrus, fennel, and wet slate notes. It’s remarkably fresh on the palate with mouth-watering acidity balancing the warm (14% ABV) and fruit-driven profile. It’s positively delicious!

We’re pairing it w/ pan-seared sea scallops, roasted asparagus, & lemon-herbed farro…

Cheers to nurturing the diversity of Burgundy in all of its splendor! 🥂

Spoto Wines

Cuvée Pamela Oakville Red Merlot Blend 2013

@Delectable Wine this one was not in the database. This is the 2013 Cuvee Pamela. Name changes yearly.

I just can't stay away from these. Had to buy more 11 and now I fear I'm going to have to do the same here. 60 Merlot, 30 CS, 10 CF, 2 Malbec. The nose of this wine is sweeter fruit but also has a meaty and herbal characteristic. Powerful. The palate is black cherry dominant and pretty acidic. Middle is where there is more herb, hint of sweet tobacco, black pepper starting a little early on this one. Not as earthy nor as much cocoa or chocolate as I thought there would be. The finish of this wine is lighter but does continue for quite a while. I see this one continuing to improve over the next 3-4 years for sure...problem is that I'm going to have 0 of these left to experience that!!

Pamela Adelaide Hills Chardonnay Pinot Noir 2013

Crisp with a tight fruit structure and just enough sweetness for it to slide across the palate leaving a lovely after taste of summer fields.

Hyde De Villaine

HDV Hyde de Villaine 'Ygnacia' Pinot Noir 2021

Here’s a stunning Pinot Noir born of two legendary winemaking families – one from Burgundy (de Villaine) and one from Carneros, Napa (Hyde) – brought together through the marriage of Pamela & Aubert de Villaine.

Hyde de Villaine (HdV) is a boutique Napa winery and an intimate partnership between the de Villaine family (of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti / Domaine de Villaine) and the Hyde family (of Hyde Vineyards) forming a bridge, and deepening the bond, between their respective winemaking heritages.

The wine label bears a coat of arms for the de la Guerra family, among the earliest pioneers of winemaking in California, garnering awards dating back to 1876. The Hydes are descendants of this family; featuring the coat of arms is a tender way of paying homage to the family legacy, history, and tradition.

This particular wine is the Hyde Vineyard Ygnacia Pinot Noir 2021, made from select blocks of coveted Hyde Vineyard fruit.

It has a pristine ruby hue and pronounced aromas and flavors of wild strawberry, cherry, boysenberry, black cherry, red currant, rose water, hibiscus, licorice, wet stones, vanilla, nutmeg, cardamom, and clove. A crisp acidity adding vibrancy to balance the perfectly ripe expression of the fruit. It is dry with medium, fine-grained tannins, medium alcohol (13.8% ABV) and a long, elegant finish.

An all-around beautiful wine with the structure to age while remaining highly approachable and thoroughly delicious even in youth.

Bass Phillip

Reserve Pinot Noir 2007

Aromas of mushroom and forest floor. Great intensity on the palate. One of the most impressive statements I’ve ever read about this winery and it’s wines was from Rob Geddes MW who said “Putting it simply, Bass Phillip has made some of the best Pinot Noir I’ve drunk in my whole life, from anywhere of any age”. I would think that Rob, being a Master of Wine would have drunk quite a number of Grand Crus in his time so this is quite the accolade. Even at 12 years of age still a future - say 3 to 5 years. Phillip Jones says up to 15 years. Palate staining root vegetable juice!! — 6 years ago
