Tasted blind. Reddish tawny. Translucent and bright appearance. Medicinal nose. Notes of dark fruit, spice, earth. Powerful perfume. In the mouth it’s refined and has great structure. Someone guessed old DRC, I’m in the Chambolle region. Nobody sensed Italian even with this bottle following the ‘71 A Conterno. Later in the evening it was full power Nebbiolo tho. Great treat to try this rare Giacosa vineyard. — 5 years ago
I think Montefico is one of the richer Cuvées in the PdB range. Initial response - Menthol and Mint - very savoury. Dry powdery tannins; a touch of liquorice and tar on the medium plus bodied palate. Dried cherry. Some bitterness at the finish - good grip even at 13 years. I’m not across all of the PdB Riservas but if anyone is it is probably Galloni. His description, “Imagine the precision of Ovello but with slightly darker fruit and more density and power through the middle. That’s the Montefico.” — 2 months ago
The 2016 Barbaresco Montestefano is simply magnificent. Bright floral overtones and red/purplish berry fruit give the Montestefano a feeling of focus and explosive energy that is compelling. Hints of mocha, leather, smoke, lavender and a whole range of balsamic inflections open up in the glass, revealing a Barbaresco of power, structure and complexity. Ample in feel and yet wonderfully vibrant, the Montestefano is wonderfully complete. It is also one of the very best wines I have ever tasted from La Ca' Nova. The Montestefano is a bit more showy today than the Montefico, but both wines are remarkable. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, November 2019) — 5 years ago
Dark and broader than the Montefico drank alongside. Well rounded structure and real depth to the fruit. Seemed very complete to me and my favourite of the 2008 M’s. — 3 years ago
Mid Ruby in colour. Aromas of menthol. On the palate again, virtually no fruit at 15 years - ultra savoury with sandy, tarry, fine powdery, yet persistent tannins. This was a great match with Roast Lamb for Mother’s Day in Australia. No. 3086 of 10,000 bottles. Jancis’s tasting note back in 2012 said “this would make a great introduction to mature Nebbiolo “. — 4 years ago

2018 vintage. Spicy and a tad weedy (not the 4/20 variety) nose. Light-medium body but plenty of punch. Abusive Luxardo cherry in the flavors alongside cola nut, raspberry and rhubarb. Biggy tannins but mostly front-loaded vs back end. Needs a good 2 hour decant to air out. Tremendous hollers for the dollars. Almost a Pinot/Burgundy-styled bod. Almost. So much zip and personality. Super fresh and super presh. Love this producer. 3.31.24. — 2 months ago
