Maurice Vesselle

Brut Millésimé Grand Cru Champagne Blend 2013

Maurice Vesselle is a récoltant whose small estate of maybe 15 acres, is in Bouzy and Tours sur Marnes. Most of their vineyards, all Grand Cru, are dedicated to Pinot Noir with the balance, Chardonnay. They are a strict no-malo, all INOX producer. One other note, the corks on these bottles are so stubborn. I had one hell of a time getting it extracted in an elegant fashion. We had people over and I was multitasking, making the risotto which, of course, needed my undivided attention. Ultimately, I ended up grabbing the Wüsthof and sabering that mf’er.

So, sabered and poured. The wine is a straw color with medium- viscosity and a persistent mousse. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of strawberry, light brioche, lemons, marzipan and limestone minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long, mineral driven and zippy! This needs a ton of air at this stage but if you allow it, what a treat! Better after 2025 through 2043. The Millésimé is typically 80/20, Pinot Noir/Chardonnay. Dosage 4g/l (and seems it). Disgorged June 2023.

Harmonie "R" Alsace Pinot Gris Blend 2020

Unusual blend of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer from the Rangen Grand Cru, the southernmost of Alsace’s grand cru sites. Volcanic soils. Baked lemon, pear and some smoky, flinty and herbal notes on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, dry, salty texture. Lemon, minerals on the palate. High acidity. Long, salty finish (I should probably have waited 2-3 years to open this bottle, but alas… — 4 months ago

Les Chaignots Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2014

Very last bottle of this. Again the cork is fully soaked. The nose is typical cherry and red berries, along with an earthy thing and a bit of hay. The palate is acid driven and very long. There is a nice matter, a gentle mouthfeel, a nice cherry and red berries note all along, almost a sweet spot on the sides. In the rear some tannins pop in creating a layer of disturbance in the mouthfeel that remains hanging in there for a very long finish with fruit. It's very good but it's starting to show early signs of aging and I don't believe the bottle could have waited much longer before going south. A little less fruity than aux damodes, a bit stricter and longer. Cool nevertheless — 2 years ago

"Aux Damodes" Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2014

After tasting aux chaillots 2014 last week and seeing that fully soaked cork I went on and opened one aux damodes in the same vintage. I believe it's my very last bottle...
The nose is showing a bit of age with strawberry and cherry notes, hay and that irony thing I like so much with Pinot Noir from burgundy. There is almost a rusty touch in the nose that makes me think that we shouldn't be waiting some more to pop and pour this one. The palate is superb. Good acid drive, superb fruity notes all along with cherry and strawberry playing hide-and-seek all along, superb mid palate with a layer of tannins that disrupts a rather easy going, fruity palate so far, and a finish with fruit and that nice layer created in mid palate for a good while. It's fresh, it's fruity, it has a touch of complexity and character you could expect from.a wine with this pedigree. Awesome!

Kaefferkopf Alsace Grand Cru Riesling 2013

100% Riesling from different plots on granite soils at the top the Kaefferkopf Grand Cru, on the south-east facing slopes above Ammerschwihr, between Kaysersberg and Niedermorshwihr, northwest of Colmar (They also make a blend of Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris from this grand cru, one of the only two grand crus is Alsace which allow blends of different varieties). Elegant, great complexity at 10 years old — 4 months ago
