Rutherglen Durif 2001

Perfectly mature. Tannins soft and juicy. So rich and Lucious. Got better the longer it was open — 7 months ago

Linne Calodo

Rising Tides Paso Robles Syrah Blend

Bought a case of this from Matt (winemaker) in 2008 when their tasting room was more of a shack. This is the last of the vintage and it’s just so good. A lot going on in this bottle still. Complex and earthy. Glad we waited! — 4 years ago

Ferren Wines

Silver Eagle Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018

First wine I’ve had from this producer and another notch in Matt Courtney’s belt. A really beautiful Sonoma Coast Pinot through and through with fantastic energy, texture, structure, and balance. Earthy berries. Stone fruits. Layers upon layers of aromas and flavors. Reads a bit hot at 14.1%. Stunning wine, but is it worth 2.5 times the price of Faiveley Mercurey? 🤷🏼‍♂️ — 4 years ago

Reynvaan Family Vineyards

Foothills Reserve Syrah 2017

The 2017 ‘Foothills Reserve’ Syrah is a simply magical new wine by Matt Reynvaan. The nose takes on highly hedonistic tones, showing beautiful range from orange zest to Umami to bacon fat and roasted dates with fresh sage that all collide in the glass. Silky smooth on the mid-palate the wine unveils a remarkable depth and salinity. The elegance here is extraordinary with a sensational mouthfeel. Hoisin sauce, blood orange, bulls blood and Umami with wild blackberry cobbler flavors all combine marvelously in the glass. The exceedingly long finish lingers long on the palate. Morris Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir 2008

Not a Pinot Noir for the newbie. More Burgundy, less California with a bouquet of tarragon, cedar, mint, redwood, black cherries, blood orange peel, green olive, sea spray, and smoked game meats. Intense, complex and a real joy for a lover of earthy, terroir-driven Pinots with a character. — 8 years ago

Three Wine Company

Spinelli Vineyard Mataro 2015

128-year-old Mataro vines from the Spinelli Vineyard in Contra Costa County, the dark black fruit aromas and flavors seem unmistakably Californian, quite ripe, still shows lots of structure and old vine intensity, long, lingering finish, last bottle but this is another outstanding wine from Matt Cline!! — 8 months ago

I used to order these wines through Wine Access years ago. I enjoyed them initially but then over time grew a bit weary of them because none of them weighed in at less than 15%. The fruit was impeccable. I love those old CC vineyards. But I prefer it when people like Ridge, Bedrock, and, to a slightly lesser degree, Sandlands, bring in and vinify those gorgeous old vine grapes at a slightly lower level of ripeness.

@Tom Casagrande, I can’t disagree with anything you’ve said, I wish these 3 Wines were more 14% than 15%, but I’ve way worse from some “name” southern Rhône wines (my favorite region in the wine world) — I guess it’s “climate change”??

If other wineries can source the fruit from the same CC old vineyards and come in under 15, that suggests that the difference is a conscious choice. But in the Southern Rhone, I think your point is more applicable. They’re primarily working with Grenache there, and, particularly in CDP and Lirac, it’s a real challenge to get phenolic ripeness without sugar levels that take you to 15 and beyond. I feel for those folks. Climate change is an existential challenge for them.

Matthews Cellars

Claret Red Bordeaux Blend

A much bigger and bolder Claret from winemaker Matt Loso. Notes of stewed plum, chicory and currant jam. Full bodied and complex on the palate, mild to medium tannin with a velvet finish. Great addition to my Christmas table paired with coffee rubbed tri tip steaks. — 7 years ago

Samsara Wine Co.

Rancho la Viña Vineyard Pinot Noir 2022

2022 vintage. Tasted with the winemaker Matt Brady. Nearly equal (and maybe better) to the 2021 vintage. Jumped at the 2021 effort so no room for this one but absolutely delicious follow-up. Spice, tannins, fruit all in balance and verry harmonious. It’s Pinots like this that keep me sold on the Santa Rita Hills as dayumed likely the best pinot-producing area in CA. 03.12.25 — a year ago

Domaine Maume

Lavaux St. Jacques Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2010

Similar notes from April 2020 when I last had it. A red fruited nose giving a lovely earthy perfume with Sous Bois influences. Loam, compost heap nose. Same red fruits on the medium weight palate with strawberry and a touch of raspberry. As Jasper Morris said in his book, Lavaux St Jacques is one of the cooler sites in Gevrey Chambertin. This is always the last Rousseau wine to be picked and enjoying a longer hang time. After a couple of hours, just a gorgeous nose. — 5 years ago

@Ira Schwartz No the grapes were ripe. Delectable had put the vintage as 2011 which might have misled you. Now changed it to the correct 2010.

All over the map and that’s what made it stand out. Earthy, leather, white pepper, cola, while also heavy on red fruit. Bigger high alcohol pinot yet smooth. Dry, lingering finish. — 7 years ago

Arista Winery

El Diablo Vineyard Chardonnay 2014

14’ Arista UV-EL Diablo Vineyard Chardonnay. Old world!?! Burgundian style!?! Needs another year or more!!
Rich & layered. White flowers, white peach, fig, minerality. Light on its feet. Very well-made Chardonnay.

Matt Courtney winemaker, somebody I enjoy following. Matt started up Ferren wines a few years back. EDIT- Your worst fears... last glass was better then the first. WAIT until 2020/21.
He also had an 8/10 year apprenticeship with Helen Turley at Marcassin.
