Saint-Joseph Syrah 2014

This is hitting the spot tonight. Probably because I'm back in my own home with my lovely wife. But, the wine is super pleasant. At 12 years, this Syrah shows bright red fruit, apple skins, a little herbal spice, and a touch of tar on the back end. It's very good, and probably in its prime.

@Dave, I’m sure you know this, but Vidal-Fleury is the winery that Etienne Guigal (Marcel’s father and Philippe’s grandfather) got his start in WAY back in the day (1940s is only a guess on my part?), which the Guigal family eventually purchased. I’ve always thought the V-F wines to be good to very good, though not quite at the E. Guigal level. Maybe Philippe will see this note and comment.

Cote Rotie Brune Et Blonde 2015

Rich, brambly nose leads a pure, clean Côté-Rotie with lots of rotie: sun-baked clay and earth, roasted meat. Probably deserves a few years to gain some weight. — 5 years ago

Côte Blonde La Chatillonne Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2010

Tiny production. Three barrels. Gorgeous. Focused. Cherries, spice, some raspberry. Blind I'd say it's an American Syrah. It isn't. — 8 years ago

Crozes-Hermitage Syrah 2010

Tastes a little flatter than I expected, probably because of 9 years of age.
Be that as it may, medium + body and very fruit-forward flavor profile. Decent acidity and mouthfeel.
Primary notes on the pallet are cured meat, acai berry, black pepper, and plum skin. Hint of tar and gamey jerky.

At Pino who insists I pick one to open, aside from his Amarone. This one has aged well with dark fruit and fading forest leaves and earth in the core. — 7 months ago

Hermitage Syrah 2013

Bright ruby center and violets on the rim. Medium viscosity. On the nose, I found ripe cherries, blueberries and hints of blackberry followed by smoky meat, spices and finally some mineral tones. Multilayered aromas and obvious complexity coming through. On the palate, confirmed these and also picked up bacon and chocolate’y tones. Tannins were very much there, but in balance with acidity and alcohol. Finish was long and savory. Outstanding Syrah that will continue to get better over the next 5-10 years. — 6 years ago

Olivier Leflaive

Oncle Vincent Bourgogne Chardonnay

Vidal Fleury was founded in 1781 by Joseph Vidal functioning as the oldest winery in the Rhone Valley. A blend of 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre, dark red with aromas of black fruits and subtle floral scents. On the palate beautiful red berry fruits with cacao and spice. Soft tannins showing maturity, lingering ending with a good hold on the fruit and spice. Very nice, great to drink now. — 8 years ago
