Very nice. At local in Jackson hole. Glad I’m not paying for it. Sharp. Earthy. Metallic. Pepper. — 3 years ago

Le Due Terre

Sacrisassi Bianco Colli Orientali del Friuli 2009

The colour is dramatically golden, but is amazingly bright
I thought that perhaps it was gone but the wine has found a balance
It's still fresh with a nectarine fruit
After that it starts with white nougat, hay, lanolin, ferns, lemongrass, ginger, sesame, nearly laksa-like scent.
I admit this could have been a hole in the water, but the wine is singing
Perhaps not extremely long, but unique
At peak

Fable

Lion's Whisker Syrah Blend 2009

Today I’m missing the ability to travel to far-flung places or to a local watering hole for that matter.

Intense aromas of dark roast espresso coffee tannins, sandalwood, berries, and cinnamon spice.

Upfront cinnamon and black pepper spice kick, medium body and acidity. Smooth operator with a cool whisper of raspberries and the like culminating in a pleasant clove afterglow.

This is different in a good way. Complex and surprising. Easy drinking, too. Could think of many ways to pair this culinarily and seasonally. From baked lamb to popcorn, to even some rich creamy gelato flavors.

Château Moulin de Tricot

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

2016, so, young and wound up. Nose of live cypress, fresh dug hole along a wood, pine one, cherrywood, pressed raspberry; barely broken. Raisin rolls, chanterelle, rose stem. Rocky, with a silken red liquid rose petal moment that turned chewy round tannin and lush burst of plum. A solid nod to graphite immersed in raspberry tartness, red currant and slightest cinnamon and slighter peppercorn. Green in spots but there architecturally.

Château Serilhan

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

Really good nose, very inviting and so unmistakably left-bank. Aromas of blackberry, plum, cedar, pencil shavings, earthy quality, tiny hint of vanilla - all round an excellent, well balanced nose.

Palate a little less impressive, with quite a noticeable ‘hole’ in its middle, and some green pepper and tomato vine flavours. That fruit just disappears! Mostly sour cherry, cranberry, and quite a stalky palate with ample acidity, gentle tannins but not great depth to the fruit. It’s still enjoyable, though, and at this price £18 represents v good value.

I feel like this wine is an illustration of how it can hurt to be analytical about wine - dissecting a wine’s qualities and its flaws - as this is really a perfectly good Bordeaux in many aspects and does speak to its terroir. A little more body to the palate and this could’ve been a great wine.

Alfredo Maestro (Bodegas y Viñedos Maestro Tejero)

Viña Almate Tempranillo 2019

From Castilla Y Leon, & at 14.5% abv, not something that typically attracts me. But the importer Pastor brings in great sherries, so down the rabbit hole I went. Glad I went. Pours an inky black, with integrated blackberries & cassis on nose & on palate. Fills up the mouth but in balance- like Juan Gil, does not drink big or taste out of balance. If anything, tastes more like a black fruited Chinon, especially with a fine graininess to its texture. Had with harissa chicken & quinoa. — 3 years ago

Beyond the Clouds Alto Adige Bianco Chardonnay Blend 2019

Aromatic and complex with immediate notes of pineapple, honey crisp apple, vanilla, and tinges of white grapefruit, mango, white peach, orchard blossoms, and dolostone. Definitely some gewurztraminer in here, likely some Riesling and Pinot Grigio, too. Acidic, but in a good way, as should be expected from any Alto Adige white. I love it, but I can see why others would have trouble aligning it with their palate if you aren't into cool climate whites (Alsace, Mosel, Alto Adige). Those expecting a White Burgundy alternative will be disappointed, though the oak is Burgundian, even Oregonian in character in this blend. — 3 years ago
