Julius Eden Valley Riesling 2023

Clear lemon color. Notes of pear, white flowers, green apple, and honey on the nose. The palate shows citrus, lime, and mineral with tangy acidity. Dry and vibrant but needs more time to open up.

Keyneton Euphonium Barossa Shiraz Blend 2018

Hill of grace ! Un jour. — 5 months ago

Eden Valley Noble Rot Sémillon 2021

Sometimes good to have these “noble”stickies a little on the youthful side. Vibrant and fresh with intense flavours of marmalade, peach, apricot and honeycomb. Delicious with the milk parfait, wild raspberries and rhubarb. That finishes off a sensational weekend tasting. Keeps my record intact of never having a bad Henschke wine. Most of these were world class. — 7 months ago

Giles Lenswood Vineyard Pinot Noir 2006

Henschke is better known for its stellar old vine Shiraz like Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone and others. I didn’t realise that they made a Pinot Noir until I went to the Henschke master class weekend with Steven and Pru Henschke. This comes from the Lenswood vineyard in the Adelaide Hills. This wine has a lovely red fruited nose with a toffee note. The palate shows a dirty strawberry on the light to medium weight palate but exhibits mid palate intensity carrying its 18 years of age with ease. I should find out if Henschke have persisted with the style because it is excellent but I don’t see it offered anywhere. — 4 months ago

The Wheelwright Shiraz 2019

The final few wines from the Henschke weekend at Spicers Peak Lodge. The Wheelwright Vineyard was planted in 1968 in the Eden Valley by Cyril Henschke. Has the same Sage and Pepper characters similar to Mount Edelstone and Hill of Grace. Crushed herb characters and red fruit. Full bodied and promising a long cellar life. HH says to 2036. The wines name pays tribute to the founder, Johann Christian Henschke who established the family winery in 1868. He arrived as a skilled stonemason and wheelwright. — 7 months ago

Tappa Pass Vineyard Selection Shiraz 2021

The quality of these many and varied Henschke cuvées never ceases to amaze. Just brief notes - not as much spice as Mount Edelstone and Hill of Grace. This is from the Barossa and provides a point of difference to their big guns in the Eden Valley. A more full bodied palate showing black and blue fruits and liquorice - not so much the sage and black pepper that shows on their Eden Valley reds. — 7 months ago

Cyril Henschke Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1986

100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 1 year in new French and American oak barrels, while I get the Barossa fruit feel, this also reminds, at this age, of 1980s Napa/Sonoma Cabs, close to mature, very well-balanced, complex, long, lingering finish, terrific Barossa Cabernet!! Purchased at Henschke in 1989 (my first and only visit) and shipped home via a now-defunct import/shipping company in Alameda, California (I also bought some 1986 Mt. Edelstone Shiraz and 1985 Hill of Grace Shiraz on that same trip!!) — 3 months ago

@Bob McDonald, I have had both, I might have 1 bottle of each left, though due to consolidation of wines in random boxes I can’t be sure — finding this Cab was a fluke. But I hope I do find the two Shiraz (I think I originally bought 6 each HoG and Cab, and 12 MtE).

@Bob McDonald, I don’t know if you can see my Taste Insights in Delectable, but if you can, check under Shiraz-South Australia — I checked in the 1986 Mt. Edelstone about 8 1/3 years ago and thought it was almost perfect (9.9, same as 1977 Grange), so I must have consumed a 1985 HoG before joining Delectable.

I’ll check it out Doug when I get a tick.

Hill of Grace Keyneton Vineyard Shiraz 2019

This is the current release of Hill of Grace, the 2019, priced at $975AUD and incredibly Sold Out according to the website. Matched with the 2008 as both were from hot years. Initially a sooty, minerally earthy note on the nose. Then came Satuma Plum, blackberry, spice and pepper. Stephen said only 25% to 30% of the normal volume for sale. (Hence the Sold Out). He let us in on a secret that there will be no 2020 released. I asked if the fruit is used in another Cuvée. The answer is No - the grapes are removed and thrown out. Seems a waste. He went on to explain that H of G has a different spice character to Edelstone - more of an Asian spice. Mostly used oak is used to lessen the oak influence. Elegant yet intense and without a doubt one of the world’s great wines. Will live for decades. — 7 months ago
