A Merlot dominant (90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc) right bank special from an exceptional vintage. One of the 1001 wines. More tertiary aromas at 20 years of tobacco and spice. On the medium plus bodied palate the wine shows great richness, savouriness and elegance. The following night aromas of pipe tobacco as I often get with right bank Merlot. So much inner strength with this wine which will carry it through to the early 2030’s. An interesting back story with Chateau Gazin :- A neighbour of Chateau Petrus. Gazin does not have the same power and weight as Petrus. The owners of Gazin also own Chateau La Dominique in St. Emilion, but to keep hold of Gazin they were forced to sell almost 12 acres of Gazin’s own vineyards. The purchaser was none other than Petrus and this sale robbed Gazin of some of its best parcels. — a year ago

Beautiful nose, ripe plums and blackcherry core, with cranberry and tart cherry. Subtle eucalyptus, tobacco, and olive tapenade. Roses. Racy minerality. Palate delivers ripe blackrasberry pie, clove, cedar box and cranberry. Persistent with balance and freshness. 50% Cabernet franc, 45% merlot, 5% Malbec. Grown on blue clay soils, with famous neighbors of Chevalier Blanc and La Dominique. Drink with short decant or hold. — 4 years ago
A new vintage - beautiful CDP, balanced and elegant. We decanted, but again this wine is jumping right out. Very nice. — 5 years ago

K&L notes as follows, Grand Pontet is an interesting property, positioned in the neighborhood of other stars of the appellation such as Châteaux Canon, Beau-Séjour-Bécot and Clos Fourtet. It is, however, a small estate, a mere 14 hectares, and its prices are much better than some of its more prestigious neighbors. In 1980 it was purchased by Gerard and Dominique Bécot, owners of the neighboring Beau-Séjour-Bécot. They have applied the same high standards to both Châteaux in their possession, and their winemaking team crafts Grand Pontet alongside the Beau-Séjour-Bécot wines. Recently purchased in 2021 by Domaines Clarence Dillon (Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut-Brion, et al.), the property was combined with and incorporated into Château Quintus. Full-bodied and luscious, this Grand Pontet is laden with ripe blackberry fruits, savory tobacco, licorice notes, and ripe, softened tannins. It’s seamless and bold, not shy. It’s going to require something decadent to pair with, such as filet mignon or some other black-tie dish with plenty of flavor and rich umami presence. — 4 years ago
See previous note which was my longest ever Delectable note. This wine has such an interesting story. Virtually unknown and surrounded by Right Bank royalty like Evangile, La Dominique and Petrus. Mainly Merlot with a small % of Cabernet Franc. Dark fruits with blackberry and a touch of vanilla. Only medium weight with soft fine tannins. Quite detuned. Cost $45 and drinks to its price point unlike the expensive wines produced by the neighbours. This tiny 0.4 hectare block’s grapes would normally be absorbed by one of the neighbours and end up in a much more expensive Cuvée. The previous Delectable note is incorrectly called Chateau Vieux Chantecaille but the lengthy description refers to this same wine. — 5 years ago
17.5. Decanted. Still, even better second day. Big wine, on nose and palate. Great fruit, not showing much age 21 years on. — 6 years ago
A lovely wine that is drinking very lovely right now. I personally like 14.5% wines vs the big jammy versions for their balance so this fits my tastes perfectly. Very glad I bought a futures case back in the day. Enjoy sooner rather than later. Cheers! — 8 months ago
Nose: lovely. Elegantly tropical.
Palate: lovely.
$6 on closeout until year end.

Excellent “natural” st Aubin that holds up to a classic palette. More classic than their Pinot noir. Really elegant and lovely. — 5 years ago

Acidity smoothed out with breathing. Strong plum. Made in steel instead of oak. — 6 years ago

From 2 weeks ago when the app was not functioning.
Found it in my wine fridge and wasn’t sure it was still drinkable. Cork was iffy, but came out well after some effort. Not even on the decline yet, very robust showing with red and dark fruits and a good solid foundation. Very enjoyable and could have probably stored this another 5 years. — 13 days ago
