Château Potensac

Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 1990

David T
9.3

It’s a night of first year consecutive decades, 90 & 80. Enjoyed in reverse order

From the same technical team as Leoville Las Cases.

Another great Clyde Beffa direct purchase from the Chateau or Negociant.

Still ripe older Bordeaux fruits with smoothed out lead pencil. Blackberries, black raspberries that lean into pudding, black plum, darkest, cooked cherries, raspberries edges, baked rhubarb and hues of poached strawberries. There is nothing that bites back. Dark chocolate, smooth mocha, caramel, soften baking spices-clove, nutmeg, cinnamon & vanillin, old tobacco w/ ash, used leather, dry top soil, limestone powder, black licorice to anise, dry river stone, fresh & withering dark, red flowers, amazing, rainfall acidity and a well; balance, structured, knitted and smartly polished finish that lasts 90 seconds.

Steak slow cooked in the oven at graduating low heats and then seared at 1300 degrees, 30, 30, 30 & 30. .

“The Truth is Inside” is an expression about the very bottom of a bottle of wine. Tannin soaked & it never lies. Typically the best part of the bottle. 93 that lands 94 in truth. I always leave two-three inches of wine in bottle just because it is always slightly better than the rest of the bottle. It is more concentrated.

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

J.L. Chave Sélection Hermitage Blanche Marsanne Roussanne 2018

Fantastic Hermitage from Chave’s negociant business, essentially made with the fruit that doesn't end up in the 'Domaine' Hermitage Blanc (the $300 one). Blend of Marsanne and Roussanne primarily sourced from the Maison Blanche, a lieu-dit at the top of the Hermitage hill, as well as some fruit from l’Ermite and Peleàt. Fermented and aged in barriques for 18-24 months. Beautiful nose. White fruit, exotic, floral notes. Full-bodied, honeyed, rich. Great texture. Extraordinary — 2 years ago

E. Guigal

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2007

Breaking News: “There have been reports of the death of 2007 CdP’s. It turns out they have been greatly exaggerated.”

Double decanted and enjoyed over the course of two days. Best on Day 2. The 2007 pours a deep garnet with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is vinous with powerful notes of ripe dark bramble fruit, black pepper, leather, red flowers, stony earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium, mostly integrated tannin and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long.

This was such a fun wine to drink for many reasons. First and foremost, the company was awesome. Second, I rarely drink Guigal’s CdP as there are other producers from the region that I tend to gravitate towards. And thirdly, I have largely avoided the 2007 vintage because they seemed to be fading fast after coming out of the gate with so much flash and gusto. And yet here we are, in 2024, drinking a “humble” (yet largely traditionally made) CdP from a large(r) negociant and with a lot of air, it’s showing its true quality! Call this exhibit 2007.c.D.p. of why it’s great to have an open mind and be willing to be a life long learner. A wine of surprise for sure. Drink now with extended air and through 2032.

Deux Montille

Casse-Tête Meursault Chardonnay 2006

This is such a hidden gem. Alix and Etinne's negociant label. Do I see the Roulot influence here (wink wink)? I guess so. Very muted on the nose: minerality, honey, white flowers, ripe citrus, and stone fruits. Sooo much more expressive on the palate! Very broad and soft textures, white Brioche, baking spices, apple blossoms, medium+ very integrated and soft acidity. LONG finish. — 2 years ago

Bouchard Père et Fils

Le Corton Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2012

🏅 Rating 94/100 (4,4⭐)

Beautiful clear bright ruby color. One can sense high breed of top Burgundy right away. Immense depth. Bouquet of forest red berries with some black, forest floor, Indian spices, sandal wood. With some time in the glass develops floral aromas of dark red roses. It feels like it has significant influence of new oak, but it is very well integrated and adds to wine's complexity. ⁣
Smooth, but rich and ripe juicy on the palate. ⁣
Tannins are also ripe and finely grained giving pleasant mouth feel. All elements are in perfect balance as you want your Grand Cru to be. Looong finish. ⁣

Wine opened its drinking window and delivers ultimate pleasure already. ⁣

It has this Corton character which gravitates towards Côte de Beaune rather than Côte de Nuits.⁣

This is Domaine Bouchard, not their negociant wine. Own grapes come from 3,95 ha East facing vineyard in historic lieu-dit of Le Corton.⁣

@Tegan Marriott Taler is the name after the coin that was used in Roman Empire.in Middle Ages. The name is German I believe. It was than transformed into Thaler and even 'dollar'.

Sécher Domaine de Vaudon Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2018

2023/12. Pure, classic Chablis - limpid, lemon and stone, a little flint and honey. No noticeable oak influence, in contrast to the Jadot Beauroy (another major Côte d’Or negociant whose wines I drink regularly). A bit reminiscent of Dauvissat stylistically, if not as deep. — 10 months ago

Château de Saint-Cosme

Côte-Rôtie Serine 2014

Saint Cosme is famous for its estate vineyards in Gigondas but they are also a highly regarded negociant with long standing relationships throughout the Rhone, giving them access to fruit from some highly regarded lieu-dits. Their Cote Rotie is no exception and this was a killer expression of 2014, if you’re into that sort of thing like I am. This bottle was provided from my cellar and was purchased upon release. Opened and splash decanted just before service. No formal notes and holy whole cluster Batman! This was straight up bussin, with rotundone for dayz! A black pepper and olive bomb with all of the garrigue and purple flowers your heart could ask for and some blood and bacon for good measure. The tannins are well integrated and the fruit is just really well balanced with the structure at this point. The finish was long with a dance of fruit and earth on the palate that was hugely satisfying. Some might be turned off by the sanguine, feral funkiness this wine possesses but for me, it’s hugely charming. Drink now or over the next 5-10 years with ease. Would be great with a meal or on its own (as it was tonight). — 2 years ago

Hospices de Beaune

Cuvée Blondeau Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2015

Louis Jadot negociant, I guess for WineBid? Pretty average Burgundy, decent fruit but overly acidic/sparkly early, wooden late, and turned sour after being open awhile — 3 years ago

Vosne-Romanée Pinot Noir 2004

Structure. Energy. Perhaps lacking a little life and depth as I imagine there might be a certain amount of tampering that is done in the negociant house to create this kind of stability. Can’t say for sure but it’s only the lack of life and depth that allow me to make such a speculation. Otherwise this has plenty to love. Could easily go on another ten years holding well. I imagine it would be quite similar to what it is now too. — 5 years ago
