Château Sociando Mallet

Château Sociando-Mallet

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

This wine seems finally mature, with tannins fully resolved, but still showing a firm backbone and structure, fresh acidity, very good balance, lingering finish, always a good wine for me. Funny anecdote about Sociando-Mallet, at least in the 1980s they used the worst “glue” on their labels, so about 1/3 of them fall off — as long as the bottles are in OWCs, not a big deal, but this is one where the label did fall off. 🤔🤷 — 16 days ago

@Dave @Tom Casagrande — I’ve been buying for 45 years, often in larger quantities than I should have, which leads to great wines an, alas, an increasing number of disappointments. 🤷

Château Pontoise Cabarrus Cru Bourgeois 2018

Literally just a short hop west of Sociando Mallet, a great Bordeaux I’ve bought and cellared since the great 1982, this is an 85% CS/15% M Haut-Medoc that is quite fine, definitely shows a solid tannic backbone, lovely fruit, medium-long finish, I’d guess 7-10 years easily of further development, only troubling thing for me is the 14.5% ABV, but lovely wine nonetheless. — 3 years ago

Malleolus is a Latin word meaning “small hammer or mallet” used in planting & “majuelo” Spanish for “young vine” a traditional way of referring to a vineyard in Pesquera del Duero. Deep red subtle fruit aromas with espresso & smoky notes. Blackberry & cherry with vanilla spice on full lush tannins needing more time. Château Sociando-Mallet

Ch. Bois Mallet 2005

This savory gem is part of the 2005 stash we purchased to celebrate our grandson Carter’s birth year. Often called “poor mans Latour,” Sociando shares a similar terroir one finds in Pauillac.

Well into its tertiary stage, it still is in many ways, (other than primary aromatics and flavors), displays the youth and vitality of a much younger wine.

Structurally firm, Medium>full body, ample fruit, medium+ acidity, with competing chalky tannins at the finish. Overall quite savory, dried red and black fruits abound with hints of nuts and woodland herbs. Long life ahead !!
