Château La Croix Bonneau

Henri Bonneau

Réserve des Célestins Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2001

2001 vintage. First time go with this producer. Nice fill. Excellent cork. Decanted and throwing age-appropriate sed. Tasted after 15 mins, 45 mins and 1.5 hours. Light-medium body. Plenty of color. Slightly bretty with plenty of spice push throughout the back/finishing palate. Likely another half-decade at this level/intensity before (d)evolving. 02.20.25. — 3 days ago

Bonneau du Martray

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru Chardonnay 2006

Pop and pour. A splendid medium straw color. On the nose: asian pear, crisp apples, lemon rind, almonds, floral. Taste: chalky, oily, vibrant wine with lemon zest, white peach, saline, slate, and a mineral lime peel long finish. YUM! Nice compelling wine at 19 years. — 2 months ago

Domaine des Croix (David Croix)

Les Bressandes Beaune 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2019

For me, David Croix, without a doubt, crafts the most compelling wines from Beaune, and this 19’ Bressandes was certainly exemplary. I absolutely loved it. It wasn’t bombastic and I reckon could easily be overlooked in a blind, but it embodied everything I love about red Burgundy in its most classic form. Not indulgent, fresh, fine, and refreshingly pure, with not a trace of overripe sucrosity to distract from its understated beauty.

The nose unfurled with cool, fresh fruits - a lively mélange of black and red berries layered with subtle bunchy aromas. Delicate florals weave through, underscored by the quiet intrigue of black tea and the chalky minerality that only air revealed. On the palate, it was all substance without weight, medium-bodied yet vibrant, its energy carried by a bright acidity that invigorated the senses. Spices and dried herbs unfolded gently in the mid-palate, giving way to a finish of fine, resonant salinity. What a beaut!

First bottle we had in many years. Was nice and fresh but not as complex as our recollection from great vintages. — a month ago

G.A.E.C. Bonneau & Fils

Réserve des Célestins Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 2014

One of the last couple vintages from the master, and while it won’t be as legendary as the finale of 2015 (which is one to hold), the cool 2014 vintage has been managed beautifully, and allows for early drinking. After 2 hours in the decanter it’s wonderfully expressive and aromatic wafting layers of kirsch cherries, saddle leather, camphor and violets. The palate shows striking richness and an impeccable balance of elegance, ripeness and concentration, which is quite the feat in this vintage.

When you think of vintages in Rhône that are considered to be less heralded, such as 2008 for example, typicites just don’t exist for the likes of Bonneau and Rayas. (08 happens to be one of my favorites for both). Ultimately there are no bad vintages for Bonneau, just different ones. Beautiful wine.

Château Canon

Croix Canon Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

Great effort in this not so great vintage.
Well-balanced, soft, supple, lovely fruit, some stemmy/green notes of course, some spices and minerals as well and sufficient stuffing and body to boot.
