Château Belle Rive

Belle Epoque Brut Champagne Pinot Meunier Blend 1996

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The 1996 Belle Epoque pours a deep straw color with a persistent mousse. On the nose, the wine is vinous with generous white peaches, raspberries, white tree flower, marzipan and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. The 1996 balance of acid and ripeness is so special. This gained energy with air. Drink now through 2036. Disgorged May of 2004. — 14 days ago

More acidic tension than the 21’ vintage I can remember. Love the hint of bitter grapefruit skin note. Highly enjoyable on a hot summer day. — 2 months ago

Union Sacré

Belle de Nuit Central Coast Gewürztraminer 2019

Chasing my chaotic self-administered pandemic hair chopping with a Gewurtz from Arroyo Seco which seems to me apropos as I imagine the region as wind-swept and tousled. This wine is not so much and that is a good thing. All is in harmony. There is just the right amount of everything and it hits you in order—the lychees are followed by a green lawn leading to the flower garden full of roses and gardenias all spirited along by a nice amount of acid and powered by a prickling tannin. I’m not normally the biggest Gewurtz fan but I’d reach for this a second time. I’d maybe even pair it with a “hard to pair” thing like artichoke. Something about the floral nature of both I think could line up. Is that crazy? Maybe. But this is coming from someone who just used her kitchen scissors to give herself an intentionally asymmetrical haircut. — 6 years ago

Rive Droite Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back!

Inky in color with a wide reddish rim.

Fruity nose of fresh cherries, plums, currants, light cedar, earth, herbs, chocolates and black pepper.

Full-bodied with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with black currants, black plums, cooked cherries, cedar, spices, toast, licorice, chocolates, tobacco herbs, earth and light vinaigrette.

Tangy finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a very tasty Merlot from Napa Valley. Rich and fruit forward. Elegant and very complex.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after an hour of airtime.

This 12 year old Single Vineyard Merlot is nicely balanced and still drinking at its peak.

Good by itself or with food.

A blend of 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc.

14.6% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

$150.

Just concluded the annual Fall seclusion at our cabin in the Rangeley lakes region of Maine, mobile service up there is mostly non-existent, after several days I am posting again.

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

2014 vintage. From the (great) pre-Treasury period, this is a classic Haut-Médoc, well-situated between Giscours and Cantemerle. Solid colour, with little evolution for the vintage. Cassis, cedar, violets and spices. — a month ago

Musty, earthy nose
Powerful Friit - maybe black cherry
A touch earth / bitter lingers. A touch of oak.
Zin / Cab vibes
Nice glass of wine…
