2017 vintage. Last tasted 8.8.24 (9.4), 3.15.22 (9.4) and 8.27.21 (9.4). IIRC…95% Merlot, 5% Cab Franc. Medium body. Lost a little weight and oak influence. Consequently, many of the overt, feminine influences so noticeable the last few years, have retreated a tad. More prominent dark chocolate and earthy tones currently. Second wine of classed growth Grand-Puy Ducasse. Blend 50/50 Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, has Merlot that did not make the cut for the top wine. Deep Ruby red color, with aromas of ripe dark fruits, spice and herbs. On the palate flavors of blackberry, plum and cinnamon spice. Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of a few hours. The 2012 Zayante Vineyard Syrah pours a deep ruby/purple color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with significant staining of the tears and signs of fine sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe and slightly desiccated black and blue fruits: blackberries, fig, dried purple flowers, roasted game, some black pepper, some olive, leather, old wood and a balanced combination of cool and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose, the finish is medium+. This is a very lovely Cali Syrah that has some Rhône sensibilities.
