Cantina dei Produttori Carema

Riserva Carema Nebbiolo 2016

From a lesser known “produttori” in Piemonte. Cantina Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema (what a mouthful) is a tiny cooperative in, you guessed it, Carema.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of two days. Fairly consistent throughout but I think I preferred the energy on Day 1. The 2016 Riserva pours a pale garnet with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity and no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of pomegranate, slightly bruised strawberry, toe jam (yeah, well…I’m not wrong), alpine herbs, roses some balsamico and rocky earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and saline with a silky texture. Until now, my only experience with the Carema DOC has been with Ferrando’s Etichetta Bianca and Etichetta Nera. While this bottle didn’t have the same drama as those wines from Ferrando, this was a very good example of Carema. Drink now and through 2031.

Riserva Montestefano Barbaresco Nebbiolo 1985

Absolutely singing today, seamless sweet Nebbiolo fruit, soft tannins, mature but should easily hold 5-10 years, very long, lingering finish, outstanding!! — a month ago

Riserva Rio Sordo Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2011

Last had 2 years ago. In a good place, not sure what more time will yield. Decanted a couple hours and paired with fennel rubbed pork chops. Quite seamless. Really nice fruit and a long finish with a nice acid / mineral / saline core that provides for a long finish and makes it a great food wine. — 2 months ago

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2019

First time tasting the ‘19 vintage, and the Produttori edged out one of my fave under the radar barolistas this early on. Maybe because it released sooner? Both red fruited with sour cherries and elegant tamed tannin/acid, but the Produttori had another gear of sweet incense and hard candy. The vintage does remind me of a more approachable’13 from a tannin perspective. — 20 days ago

I feel like Giacomo Fenocchio’s single vineyard Barolos need a lot of time (although Villero is usually a bit more approachable young)

@Jay Kline yep, agree 100%. I have a few to lay down but I usually open one at release to see how many I want to buy.

Riserva Montefico Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2011

I think Montefico is one of the richer Cuvées in the PdB range. Initial response - Menthol and Mint - very savoury. Dry powdery tannins; a touch of liquorice and tar on the medium plus bodied palate. Dried cherry. Some bitterness at the finish - good grip even at 13 years. I’m not across all of the PdB Riservas but if anyone is it is probably Galloni. His description, “Imagine the precision of Ovello but with slightly darker fruit and more density and power through the middle. That’s the Montefico.” — a month ago
