Finger Lakes Carbonated Cayuga 2024

This is a very good white wine. It’s a semi-dry wine in my opinion. Not oaky or buttery. Just a middle of the road taste that is surprisingly excellent. I was caught off guard by the carbonation but it’s subtle. Nothing like a Champaign. — 8 days ago

Château Potensac

Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

Enjoyed this one with my parents. Nice Bordeaux that shows herb notes with a bit of anise. Silky smooth mouthfeel. I bet this could improve with more time in bottle. — 4 years ago

Realm Cellars

The Bard Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2008

Late into our Zoom Happy Hour, we decided to open up The Bard. Since I only have older vintages of Realm (yeah, I know: poor me), I decided on the 2008. From the nose and palate I would have bet anything that this had a fair amount of cab franc in the blend, but it’s mainly cab sauvignon with about 15% petite verdot and a little malbec, I think. Anyway, this is holding up really well - and never lost a beat over several hours. I know their more recent vintages are knocking it out of the park in terms of scores, but if you have any bottles from their earlier years (first vintage of Realm was 2002), do yourself a favor and pull out one of these older bottles. They’re really good and will remind you that they were still making some pretty damn good juice before they got too cool for school. — 5 years ago

Domaine Duroche

Aux Etelois Gevrey-Chambertin Pinot Noir 2013

From magnum. Had it next to the stylistically similar Fourrier Gevrey VV, but this was the better wine for me - it had a little more depth and texture. Started of similarly reductive, but quickly opened up to scents of roses, intense red cherry, and smoky insence. The palate's velvety, mix of red and dark fruits, rich but offers lots of freshness with its crisp acidity. Minerality plays second fiddle at the moment, but is evident in the long spicy finish. I bet this was how it looked like when it was first bottled, so time can only make it better. 1er level for sure!

NB: From WH - This plot is located on the southern side of Griotte-Chambertin alongside the Claude Dugat plot and below the Duroché plot of Griottes-Chambertin. It is quite strange that this vineyard has been classified as village as it’s located so close to the Grand Crus.

@Ceccherini Cristiano Got that write up from Winehog - just for my reference. Aux Etelois, I've only had a couple of times. All Duroche. I reckon it's got the concentration and length to be a lesser 1er each time, but I believe this has much to do with producer. Same as Griotte I guess. It does have the reputation of being a lesser GC, but I reckon in the right hands... It's quite consistent. Same as Latricierws. Producer producer producer! Hahaha.

@Aaron Tan
I 100% agree
I just wanted to mentioned too how important is the terroir
No producer can make an excellent wine out of a bad parcel in any vineyard
I recall Hubert De Montille saying in Mondovino how the terroir is 10 times more important than the vigneron/winemaker
And as an example you think of Rousseau Clos de la Roche where he doesn't really have a top parcel when Dujac or Ponsot do and make a better wine (IMO) than what I consider to be one of the best red wine producer of the Cote de Nuits(I know, the other two are not bad either). Anyway I just follow those lines too, producer, vineyard, parcel, vintage, but it is never easy.
I guess that's what makes it interesting. 👌🙏

@Ceccherini Cristiano Agreed! Man can indeed overcome the factors of earth and nature, but their wisdom and effort can only go so far.

Domaine Le Roc

La Folle Noire d'Ambat Fronton Negrette 2020

After the Sicilian off dry white which I drank only a glass of in disappointment, I decided to open something I knew would make me happy. We are watching Dunkirk while drinking this wine and the contrast between the on-screen drama and the funky liveliness in the glass is stunning!
As usual the nose is a bit funky at fist and takes a good 20 to 30 minutes to set into place. Then it's violet, blueberry, clay, that iron thing too, which I always smell in this cuvée, no matter the vintage. The palate is big, bright and fruity. There are blueberry notes all along, some cherry too. Some width, a nice and soft mouthfeel, some tannins in the rear, and a really nice anf long finish with fruits, some pepper, and a nice tannic layer. There is a subtle savory note too, almost meaty, that makes it more complex than you would have bet at first. Of course this is, as always, a very biased review, but I mean, what's not to like there?

Tenuta di Trinoro

Le Cupole Rosso Toscana 2018

Much brighter than I had in memory from prev vintages. Red fruit with crunchy cherry, some blackberry & blackcurramt emerge after some time, the wine quiets with time and starts showing more Bordeaux blend characteristics.
Nice mouthfeel, juicy, fresh, the tannins surprisingly present & vibrant. Nice earthy, leathery accent towards the finish adds complexity.
A safe bet with a steak that rarely disappoints.

Historically (meaning over the past 800 years) the site was revered as some of the best terroir in France, and thus one of the only single vineyards to be granted its own AOC. Joly took over after working as an investment banker in NY and soon became a major proponent of biodynamics, wrote some books, got famous, and is now idolized as the godfather of biodynamic / no so2 winemaking. Totally revered in the natural wine world; so what I’m saying is not the most popular opinion. But the bottle variation has been well documented; some are clean, others funky, and yet others completely oxidized within the first few years. For me, given the hallowed terroir, and the price tag the wines carry, it’s a shame.

Josh - thanks for explanation. Very interesting. Fruit was stunning on this wine. The parts I didn’t like may have been part of nature, and I understand the attraction to that line of thinking, but I didn’t enjoy it and was hoping for more (given the price point and anticipation). Also “meaning over the past 800 years” (!). Well said!

Borgo Scopeto (Tenuta Caparzo)

Borgonero Toscana IGT SuperTuscan Blend 2015

Once decanted, magnificent. Full mouth of luscious dark berries with a lingering finish that begs for the next sip. Wonderful with red sauce on pasta. A great complement to nearly any Italian meal. If decanted for a couple hours, my bet is most of the other lower rated reviews would be much improved. Doesn’t need more bottle time. Just needs to be enjoyed! (And it requires food to bring out its depth and character the most! If I may be so bold, I recommend your favorite pasta with Emeril’s vodka sauce. Cannot beat it.) — 7 years ago
