T-hued to the eye, the nose is an absolutely elegant combination of the soils this Riesling was lucky enough to grow up in, and the age of the vines, planted by a legend named Pat Wirz, in the Cienega Valley of California, in 1963.
The palate of this Riesling is of a remarkable, Alsatian style that has the balance to satisfy & then some. Before it moves to the finish, a gorgeous feel of melon presents itself, as the finish makes its way not only onto the palate but quietly into the memory.
We paired it with some of Beth’s shrimp for and grits- and the pair was better than the sum of its parts.

Ode to Lulu California Old Vine Rosé Blend 2024
This is the Ode to Lulu Mourvèdre Rose (back label says that it’s “ancient vines” grown on sand, so maybe mostly CCC fruit?). The color so pale as to almost resemble a skin contact “orange” white wine. Nose is all fruit. Nectarine, strawberry, an orange-zest thing too. Dry and so gulpable. Dolinsek Ranch Heritage Red Blend
Young and fresh but showing many of the Dolinsek’s traditional traits: a big nose of blue and black fruits followed by a fruit forward wine of the same. It’s got bright acidity and firm tannins with a hint of black olive and pepper deeper in the wine. Drinking well now with loads of potential. — 4 months ago

Ode to Lucien Mourvedre Blend 2023
This old vine Mourvedre is from the Bedrock vineyard (same source as the Carignan we’re also having tonight), and is an ode to Lucien Peyraud of Domaine Tempter in Bandol, dark color, aromas and flavors are a bit wilder than the Carignan, incredibly youthful and this also needs further cellaring, long, lingering finish, fruit is less “sweet” and more structured than the Carignan, but super intense, lovely! — a month ago

Wow, this Zin is super aromatic, with fantastically pure crushed red and black fruits, some mineral, flavor profile shows lovely floral as well as the rich, deep red and black raspberry, while this wine needs further aging, it has impeccable balance and a very long, lingering finish, 13.5% ABV, 201 cases made, bravo to Joel!! — 4 months ago

A beautiful blend that somehow shows each element while being nicely integrated. Rich, round, Semillon and bright, floral and citrusy Sauvignon Blanc. Highly age-worthy — a year ago

This ancient vineyard (planted from 1888 - 1895) carries roughly 26-29 varieties (who knows…?). The wine usually comprises about 50% of Zinfandel, also quite some Carignan, Mataro, Syrah and Petite Sirah. Furthermore, there are dollops of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Bouschet, Peloursin, Trousseau, Calmette… Just to name a few. The label proudly proclaims that this particular vintage was the 127th (!) year of existence of these vines and 19 different variaties were included in the blend.
When poured in a glass I notice a bright ruby semi-translucent colour with no signs of aging. A beautiful nose of dark fruit (cassis and plum), peppery oriental spice, vanilla, cigar, cedar, toasty oak and a hint of orangepeel.
The palate has sufficient acidity, medium-plus tannines and a long and distinguished finish.
A great wine, drinking at its peak.
