Angle Vineyards

Ca' del Grifone

From Old Vine Zinfandel Primitivo

This wine is dark ruby in the glass and offers a beautiful nose that is full of dark fruit aromas and a good bit of oak. Tar also appears, adding a very earthy angle to the bouquet. On the palate, big, jammy blackberry, blueberry and cassis flavors are joined together by oak spice and a healthy dose of tannins. Despite the oak mentions, the wine tastes clean and fresh. The winery recommends pairing it with aged cheeses. I like it with spaghetti and meatballs. I used the wine in my sauce. — a month ago

Rue de Vin (Hideaki Koyama)

Deux Robes Violettes Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2011

2022/5/6 with Japanese style bincho charcoal grilled ribeye with wasabi and shoyu, shishito peppers, bamboo shoots in dashi and rice with peas. I found this at a shop and the aging conditions seemed questionable, so I was prepared for whatever. Indeed, at first the nose seemed a little browned out, but the palate still had acidity and flesh - blueberry at first. With a couple of hours of air, though, the nose brightened up, with dark berries. There’s also green pepper and smoky herbs - an interesting angle on Japanese claret. — 2 years ago

Ancient Peaks

Paso Robles Zinfandel 2021

This wine is a medium-dark purple in the glass. Aromas of brambly cherry are adorned with anise, leather, pepper and clove notes. On the palate there is red fruit and oak spice with a savory coffee angle. The tannins are firm and the acidity is fresh. A lengthy finish leaves the savory aspect strongest. Pair with any beef or pork, or even a dish based in tomato sauce. — 4 months ago

Bodega Rezabal

Getariako Txakolina Txakoli 2021

Pink orange color and visible carbonation. Peach, citrus, grapefruit on the nose. The palate is immediately interesting with a frizzante feel and good flavour intensity of peach skin, grapefruit; it’s got this this fresh green bell pepper note… Plus salinity, high acidity, medium body, a low alcohol feel, and a medium mineral (ash like) finish. Chose this Txakolina for the seven course maíz and fish meal at Pujol. Rating from that angle the wine was a great accompaniment as some of it’s components were found in the food itself. Cheers. — 10 months ago

Terlato Vineyards

The Federalist Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

This wine is medium dark in color and has dark notes on the nose - plums, blueberries, cassis. The oak aspect of the aromas is not overpowering, but it is definitely there. The palate tastes somewhat sweet, with fruit and oak spice showing right up front. A savory angle comes in later - forest floor and minerals, mostly. The tannins are workable, but not overbearing. This wine won’t make Napa vintners run scared, but it is a pleasant bottling and a pretty good everyday wine. — 2 years ago

Bonny Doon Vineyard

Vin Gris De Cigare Grenache Rosé Blend 2020

The beautiful salmon-colored wine displays a nose of cherry, red currant and an herbal hint of spearmint. The palate has a zippy acidity - Grahm says zippier than in previous vintages - and an abundance of red fruit, a citrus peel angle and a touch of tanginess. Salads and seafood, sure, but even better if you’re having them on the deck and can afford to have a few more glasses after lunch. — 3 years ago
