Right Angle Paso Robles Red Blend 2022

Very good. Good nose. Love this wine. Had it with Japanese Yakiniku and grilled vegetables. — 3 months ago

Ancient Peaks

Paso Robles Zinfandel 2021

This wine is a medium-dark purple in the glass. Aromas of brambly cherry are adorned with anise, leather, pepper and clove notes. On the palate there is red fruit and oak spice with a savory coffee angle. The tannins are firm and the acidity is fresh. A lengthy finish leaves the savory aspect strongest. Pair with any beef or pork, or even a dish based in tomato sauce. — 3 years ago

Rue de Vin (Hideaki Koyama)

Deux Robes Violettes Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2011

2022/5/6 with Japanese style bincho charcoal grilled ribeye with wasabi and shoyu, shishito peppers, bamboo shoots in dashi and rice with peas. I found this at a shop and the aging conditions seemed questionable, so I was prepared for whatever. Indeed, at first the nose seemed a little browned out, but the palate still had acidity and flesh - blueberry at first. With a couple of hours of air, though, the nose brightened up, with dark berries. There’s also green pepper and smoky herbs - an interesting angle on Japanese claret. — 4 years ago

Coltibuono

Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2018

This Chianti Classico is rather lightly tinted for a red wine, and if I had tasted it blind I might have been tempted to guess it was a rosé. The nose has a basketful of fresh cherries in it, with a floral angle and just a hint of mocha and tobacco. The sip reveals more luscious red fruit, leaning just off center into tartness, assisted by a bit of limestone chalkiness. It sneaks along a little lighter than I expect a Sangiovese to sneak, and ends up making me think of the elegance of Pinot Noir crossed with the rusticity of warm-climate Syrah. The acidity is fresh andthe tannins firm. Pair it with your favorite Tuscan dish. — 5 years ago

Ca' del Grifone

From Old Vine Zinfandel Primitivo

This wine is dark ruby in the glass and offers a beautiful nose that is full of dark fruit aromas and a good bit of oak. Tar also appears, adding a very earthy angle to the bouquet. On the palate, big, jammy blackberry, blueberry and cassis flavors are joined together by oak spice and a healthy dose of tannins. Despite the oak mentions, the wine tastes clean and fresh. The winery recommends pairing it with aged cheeses. I like it with spaghetti and meatballs. I used the wine in my sauce. — 2 years ago

Bonny Doon Vineyard

Vin Gris De Cigare Grenache Rosé Blend 2020

The beautiful salmon-colored wine displays a nose of cherry, red currant and an herbal hint of spearmint. The palate has a zippy acidity - Grahm says zippier than in previous vintages - and an abundance of red fruit, a citrus peel angle and a touch of tanginess. Salads and seafood, sure, but even better if you’re having them on the deck and can afford to have a few more glasses after lunch. — 5 years ago

Marqués de Frías

Rias Baixas Albariño 2017

The wine has a rich, golden tint and a nose which shows apricots, floral notes and pears. The palate offers a savory angle to carry the stone fruit flavors, quite a treat. Minerals are present more so than in most Albariño wines I have tried. Acidity is zippy and the finish falls barely on the tart side. — 7 years ago

Bodega Rezabal

Getariako Txakolina Txakoli 2021

Pink orange color and visible carbonation. Peach, citrus, grapefruit on the nose. The palate is immediately interesting with a frizzante feel and good flavour intensity of peach skin, grapefruit; it’s got this this fresh green bell pepper note… Plus salinity, high acidity, medium body, a low alcohol feel, and a medium mineral (ash like) finish. Chose this Txakolina for the seven course maíz and fish meal at Pujol. Rating from that angle the wine was a great accompaniment as some of it’s components were found in the food itself. Cheers. — 3 years ago

Barbera d'Alba 2019

Tested blind. Hi acidity, lots of pomegranate, bright red fruit, turned earth, slight note of tea. I called it a Morgon, in a good way, but it was missing the carbonic angle. Nice wine! — 5 years ago

Bodegas Eidosela

Rías Baixas Albariño 2018

This Spanish wine has a medium-pale golden hue in the glass. The nose is more fruity than floral, with apricots and citrus in the forefront. A salinity hovers over the fruit, giving the aromas a nice savory angle. That savory side shows up for real on the palate, with a racy acidity to go along with it. Pair this with shellfish and enjoy. — 6 years ago

Barone Montalto

Collezione di Famiglia Terre Siciliane Pinot Grigio 2019

This wine is drier than your typical - or at least my typical - Pinot Grigio. Almost the color of water, the nose shows the usual suspects: flowers and limes and rocks, oh my. The accent on minerality is a nice flourish, particularly in this grape. On the palate, the floral angle plays a tad stronger, with citrus in tow. That Sicilian salinity makes itself known throughout.
