Angelo Rocca

Rocca delle Macìe

Famiglia Zingarelli Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2022

This wine is medium dark garnet in the glass. The nose has a good supply of cherry and raspberry notes, dusted up with earth, tar and anise. The palate has a bit of licorice on it, but mainly serves as a showcase for the red fruit. There are some spicy elements, too. White pepper, nutmeg, and a very light clove sense brighten up the fruit. Tannic structure is firm and acidity refreshing. I had mine with a slow cooker red wine short rib dish, and the pairing was sublime. — 16 days ago

Bruno Rocca

Rabajà Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2007

The Rocca family makes Barbaresco wines today from various places, but their Rabajà vineyard is a PRIZED family heirloom, first acquired by Luisa and Francesco’s grandfather in the 1950s. The Nebbiolo vines now have an average age of 50-60 years. 🍇

Here we have the 2007 Bruno Rocca ‘Rabajà’ which is pale garnet in appearance.  Nebbiolo can make unexpectedly pale wines, despite having such a strong structure of tannins & acidity that provide runway for aging in the bottle 👀

As a ‘Barbaresco DOCG’, we know this wine was legally required to undergo extensive aging before release, softening tannins and lending complexity through secondary characteristics. 🪵

Indeed, this wine is layered in aromas and flavors including fig, red plum, black cherry, pomegranate, potpourri, rose, dried orange peel, black licorice, sandalwood, vanilla, nutmeg, cardamom, clove, star anise, tobacco, cigar, forest floor, mushroom, and leather.  It’s gorgeous and in an amazing place 😍

Cheers to the talented Rocca family and the deliciousness of this Rabajà Nebbiolo expression!!

Riserva Rocca de Piro Grumello Valtellina Superiore Nebbiolo 2017

Tart cherry and perhaps strawberry. Some deeper notes, but not too strong. Light color. More fruit on the nose than in the mouth. — 2 days ago

The Piedmont Guy Arneis

Floral white flower nose. Lemon, grapefruit, and more floral notes on the palate. Nice and bright, but with enough chalky mineral body to balance it out. Like a delicious adult lemonade. — 4 hours ago

La Rocca Soave Garganega 2022

Blend of indigenous varieties, 85% Garganega & 15% Trebbiano di Soave, from the heart of Soave, the Winery of Leonildo and Teresita Pieropan dates back to 1860. Pale lemon color with green edges and aromas of fresh fruits, floral blossoms and herb spice. On the palate crisp apple and peach with lemon citrus notes. Well balanced with vivid acidity carrying through to a pleasing finish. Screw cap! — 2 months ago

Albino Rocca

Vigneto Brich Ronchi Barbaresco Nebbiolo 1997

Opened and decanted two hours prior to service; enjoyed over the course of a couple hours. The 1997 “Vigneto Brich Ronchi” pours a deep, hazy garnet color with an opaque core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears and some signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe and desiccated black and red fruits: Blackberry, Morello cherry, bruised strawberry, dried roses, tar, leather, potting soil, and subtle warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. The finish is long and savory. This is in a lovely spot. Drink now through 2027. — a month ago

Happy to find this on the shelf in NorCal. Still love the Cotta, but this takes me back to Barbaresco in a whiff. — a month ago

Riserva Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2010

We had the 2010 riserva on 2/8/25. A fabulous Brunello. All of the expected good scents and flavors: black cherry, raspberry, leather and tobacco. Well balanced; tannins smoothed out. Good finish. — 2 months ago
