Carema Nebbiolo 2016

Nose has dried roses, white pepper, crushed cherries, loose tobacco, dried orange zest and dried mud.

Palate has dried tart cherry, black cherry, blackberry, wet leather, anise and very dry garden soil. Medium+ tannins not overpowering, more savory/earth notes than fruit expression on the palate; a very nice bottle with a unique expression of terroir.

Opened for slow oxidation of 6H then +3H decant, expect this to show better tomorrow. Paired to local beef short ribs (Kinderhook Farm; Valatie, NY) in an Asian-style braising sauce, plated on top of Parmesan polenta, so yum.

85% Nebbiolo, 15% Neretto & Ner d'Ala

Anyone approaching the 2016 vintage, please wait until 2024-26 until opening, and likely still too soon even then...

Popped and poured; enjoyed over three hours. Pours a dark ruby with a transparent core. Medium+ viscosity, medium+ intensity. On the nose, Twin Bing, roses, alpine air, forest floor, tar, and a small dash of baking spices. On the palate, mixed red fruits, blood orange pith, tobacco, and fresh green herbs. Quite a bit rounder than I’m used to for Barolo but it’s undeniably a charmer. The finish is very long, bone dry. Yes…this is very becoming indeed! Medium+ tannin, medium+ acid, medium + alcohol. Palate has great elegant raspberry fruit with a pleasant hint of bitterness. Some chocolate.

Texture is like silk.

Serracapelli Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2015

Wonderful wine. Decanted 4 hours and this certainly needs it at this point - will try the next bottle in 3-4 years. I actually had the 09 of this wine in Milan 4 years ago, fun to try it again through Fass Selections (and with a new label to boot). Just a great reminder of why nebbiolo is such an amazing grape when tended well. Amazingly aromatic, such depth, great fruit, nice long finish, excellent acid, and a bit of that cooling menthol note. Perfect pairing with some garlic and fennel rubbed pork chops on a rather significant night…

Editing up to a 9.4 after a few more hours of air (total 7+ hours). Also realized this is 15%! Would not have guessed it, but had a nice chill on it throughout.

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2016

Medium red to orange in color, showing age fairly early in my opinion. Red cherry, eucalyptus, and forest floor on the nose. Medium plus acidity--almost high. 14.5 ABV. Strong tart red cherry forward on the palate. Anise, roses, and some tertiary flavors of dried leaves emerging. Tannins are firm. Young, sorry to wake you up bro.

Light brown/red color…violet, rose, bright cherry notes… very light in texture, bright and lively acidity. A bit young, but very nice with grilled pork tenderloin, risotto with fresh zucchini and oven roasted tomatoes. Very nice food wine … sitting on a few more for next few years. Nebbiolo works so well with slow cooked risotto with lots of fresh parmigiana regiano. — a month ago

Attention wine drinkers, 2017 is awesome in Alto Piemonte and is more of a pick and choose vintage in the Langhe. It’s 2 hours north so what happens in the Langhe isn’t what happens in the Alto Piemonte.

Anyways this is a smoke show. Nose has deep, soppy late season cherries, smoke, spice, leather and minerals. Floral and ripe. Excellent purity and focus. Big wall of tannins and perfectly ripe fruit on an elegant frame. Lovely cleansing minerality on the finish. Terrific freshness. Just a great wine. Amazingly well made and super long finish. Young. Need a few hours but what a wine.

What can I say - almost at its peak. Powdery tannins, leather, rose pedals, licorice, cigar box, touch mint can go for another 5-10 years plenty of tannins left. Very classic. I should have bought so much more. One of the best Nebbiolo’s ’ I had in a long time. — 4 days ago
