Vine Hill Ranch

Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

9.5

Bruce Phillips and his wife were pouring their 2021. Talked w/ him at length. Very nice couple.

The 2021 showed well young with room for improving with 10-25 years in bottle and beyond. It showed some evolution, wasn’t all primary. Elegant, very well balanced with excellent structure and finish. Drink 2033-45 properly stored.

The general Napa consensus on 2022 vintage will be a story of did you pick before or after the 6 days of extreme heat during the harvest window. One producer told me his would add 5% of 2023 to some of his 2022’s, which is allowed. He mentioned that he was going to add 15%. But, I think he just misspoke? Get ready for an amazing 2023 vintage from Napa. It was a cooler, not hot-hot, which was a near perfect growing season for long slow even ripening. Some say a vintage of a lifetime and others would only say exceptional.

The Saturday-Sunday Pavilion tasting at Pebble Beach Food & Wine is an excellent four hours to taste a lot wine, taste curated dishes from chefs from all over the country and meet the people behind the bottle. These short ribs were one of the top two or three things I tasted at the Pavilion Saturday.

Viña Bosconia Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2008

N:Dark cherries , plums, strawberries and warm spices. Dark licorice, soil and wood.
P:After 5 yrs in American oak, the palate is refined yet burly, oxymoronic. Not as delicate as Tondonia, but deeper, more rooted to the earth. Black/red. Delicious weight. These LdH wines are so iconoclastic, they live in their own space/time. One of the great treasures, I wish people hadn’t discovered them.
These wines have loooonnng lives.
Very rewarding

@Romain Fitoussi Hi, Each LdH is an expression of an individual vineyard ( mostly). So, expressionistically, Gravonia, Bosconia, & Tondonia are each their own. Blanco too. There is a very nice Tondonia Rosado ( very expensive now).
All are worth exploring and there is extensive vintage info. Cheers.

Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Oh so smooth and rich. A bold deep flavored Cabernet. This is what people drink Cabernet for. — 4 years ago

Opus One

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2005

What a treat to enjoy a perfectly aged Opus One with friends over dinner. The wine was gorgeous, great color, classic nose with black fruit and spice, lovely weight and texture with a long satisfying finish. I wish more people had a chance to taste this wine when it is at this age, outstanding! — a month ago

Le Bois Jacou Touraine Gamay

A solid budget “Beauj”. This actually tastes like terroir and you can tell the winemaker is trying to not get too involved in the cellar unlike last nights moulin a vent. A lightness and tartness that is quite fun raspberry notes of fruit and a lot of acidity lead to a good drinking wine. Perhaps cherry notes in the middle? The finish isn’t huge but it does linger after swallowing. Actually the nose is quite pretty. Lilac notes? A flower. Highly recommended. The light tartness on the finish might a little much for some people. Maybe air will mellow it. Will buy again.
Edit: after 20 or 30 min of air the tart end integrates and the wine smoothed even more out. This probably deserves a higher rating than 9. Highly recommended

Morlet Family Vineyards

Billet Doux Late Harvest Sémillon 2013

9.4

My second set of wines to provide as part of a co-host event.

I picked these up during a visit to Morlet in the fall of ‘21. Sadly, these are the last of my initial stash. 58 semillon/36 SB/6 Muscat.

Poured blind for a group of 20 people at the end of a wine event, I was shocked that not one single person called this Cali. Many Sauternes, Barsac, and a few South African dessert wine guesses. It’s undeniably sporting botrytis flavors, but the richness has a wonderful spine of acidity. Honeyed mango, white peach and chock-full of orange blossom on the nose, there’s added candied spice and honeycomb on the palate. Didn’t pick up any nutty flavors (which I enjoy in Sauternes), but this was also fairly young. Extremely “fresh” for a dessert wine, if that makes sense. Best Cali dessert wine I’ve had, I think.

I think most people do not know that such a wine is made in California. I would have guessed the same.

Realm Cellars

Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

From back when I could afford Realm (was one of the early people on their mailing list thanks to a chance meeting with Juan Mercado), this wine was absolutely breathtaking. Classic Napa cab…and one of the few 10s I’ve ever given out. Just amazing. — 2 years ago
