Gauthier Sylvain Saint-Joseph Syrah 2016

9.3

A great vintage to drink now. Nose of olive, pepper, grilled meats, floral, granite and red berry fruit. Showing so well. Palate is easy like Sunday morning. Silky and ripe wirh outstanding balance and purity. Loads of berry fruit and ample freshness. So pure and sappy. Peppery finish and lovey granite and earth tones. No rush but this is in a great place now.

After air, more aromatic with blackberry, violets, olive and game, herbs, granite. So good. 9.2 to 9.3. Gains more elegance on the palate and really brings the fruit and refined tannin.

Prior notes apply:
Nose has under-ripe pineapple, cut yellow apple, yellow raspberry, faint herbal notes and wet, crushed rock.
Palate has saline apple juice, mashed yellow raspberry, dried lemon pith and moist garden soil. Solid acidity and a long finish, fun wine.

Clos du Mesnil Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne Chardonnay 1982

🏅Rating 97+/100 (4,75⭐)

Clos du Mesnil is a 1.84-hectare vineyard in Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger surrounded by the walls. Its location and microclimate define a distinct terroir for Chardonnay which is renowned in Champagne as much as Montrachet in Burgundy.

This precious CdM'82 I shared with my champagne fellows on the eve of COVID-19 crisis. Memories that CdM definitely imprints in our minds and deep emotions which stay forever.

Perfectly aged multilayered wine with a complex tertiary bouquet to die for. Roasted nuts, honey, chalkiness and underlying pronounced acidity. So joyful!

Solo in Remi Krug terms, but the power of its voice equals to the orchestra.

Crozes-Hermitage White Rhone Blend 2018

9.3

New project between Remi Gauthier and his brother Sylvain Gauthier. Killer nose. Honey, honeycomb, beeswax, mineral, some vineyard peach but barely there. Huge earthy notes and killer minerals. Super precise and aromatic. Spice, herbs. Wow what complexity. This is awesome. Smells like elite white Rhone. Palate is teeming with energy, richness and ripeness and insane purity. Wow this is terrific. Awesome inner mouth aromas and terrific almost Rieslingesque freshness, minerality and intensity. So juicy with an explosiveness to it. This is the best beginner white Rhone i have ever tasted. Just stunning. — 3 months ago

Jour de Soif Bourgueil Cabernet Franc 2018

Delectable Wine
9.1

The 2018 Bourgueil Jour de Soif (Cabernet Franc) is bold, pungent and racy. I very much like the energy here. Inky dark fruit, savory herbs, lavender and cloves give this dark, powerful Bourgeuil so much character. In the glass, the 2018 is dense and full of personality, not to mention incredibly delicious. This is a terrific effort from Pierre Gauthier. Best of all, it is a tremendous value. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, October 2020) — 19 days ago

Crozes-Hermitage Red Rhone Blend 2017

@Delectable Wine this is the red Crozes. Thanks!

Gorgeous nose on this new project from the Gauthier Brothere. Lovely, lurid, gamey, peppery, white pepper, cracked black pepper, huge granite, such complexity, really refined and well made. You can tell from first sniff there is a high degree of winemaking skill here. The nose is terrific. 9.3/9.4 verging. I love well made Crozes. Palate is a delight, superb purity and freshness and densely fruited but also dense minerals. So sappy and pure. Blackberry fruit, red berry fruit, sappy spices and gaminess. Bacon even. This is so well fruited and balanced between sauvage/game and pure unreal fruit on a granite background. Just so impressive. After air impressive sweetness and energy abound. Really terrific balance and finish.

Les Rouges Terres Pinot Noir 2018

This bottle appears more inline to our prior experiences with the 2017 iteration. Last bottle was an anomaly.

Nose has mashed black cherries & strawberries, new leather and minor anise notes. Quite Beaujolais-like.

Palate has tannic cherries, grilled fennel, under-ripe plum, wet gravel, nice acidity and a fresh/fruity quality.

A pretty good wine, I still feel the 2017 version has the edge over this 2018.
