Nebbiolo

Giacomo Borgogno & Figli

Riserva Barolo Nebbiolo 2015

Ruby/ brick in color with medium intensity.

Beautiful nose with blue and red fruits, caramel, light oak, cooked cherries, red currants and tobacco leaf.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with cherries, raspberries, spices, light oak, earth, chocolates, tobacco, espresso and peppercorn.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

This 10 year old Barolo is still fresh and vibrant. Delicious and easy drinking with a great mouthfeel. Complex and well balanced. Tangy and interesting.

Already drinking beautifully, and will continue to age nicely in the next 20 years and beyond.

Gorgeous, elegant and robust. A great sipping wine to share with friends and talk about.

100% Nebbiolo grapes were aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for 6 years.

14% alcohol by volume.

93 points.

$200.

Massolino

Serralunga d'Alba Barolo Nebbiolo 2019

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of 90min. The 2019 “Serralunga d’Alba” pours a garnet color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with beautiful notes of red and black fruit: Morello cherry, fresh raspberries, pomegranate, orange zest, fresh cut red roses, talcum powder, tar and dry gravelly earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. Massolino is on a roll! Drink now with patience through 2044+. — a month ago

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2019

Last had this vintage a couple years ago. These obviously have a long life ahead of them. With some nice air, this does open up. Wonderful dark fruit and earth aromas. Tannins are quite present and a bit bitter (not in a bad way at all). Excellent acid on the finish. Delicious pairing with kinderhook pork chops with tutto porchetta seasoning. — 9 hours ago

Albe Barolo Nebbiolo 2020

I would have guessed Brunello rather than Barolo — a little lighter than expected. Granite, rose, violet, red fruit, Italianate acidity - but not overly complex. Enjoyable. Just squeaks into 91. Not a great value for the $35 I paid. — a month ago

I've always found Albe pleasing for the price, maybe had it 5 or 6 times. Cheers!

I find it puzzling that some wines do this (act “tired” initially but then do a Benjamin Button). But I’ve experienced this before. I’d love to know whether this is associated with certain winemaking techniques.

@Tom Casagrande I agree. But I attribute it to a Nebbiolo which hasn’t seen air for 12 years. But I’m no expert on the matter besides the experience you have: starting tired but opening surprisingly after some time in the glass.
