Marqués De Léon

WillaKenzie Estate

Pierre Léon Yamhill-Carlton Pinot Noir 2015

Nose was super-candied cherry right out the gate and then got a little shyer with air. The cherry got a bit deeper and sultry, accompanied by a gorgeous and increasing moist gravelly earthiness and a bit of spice. Not heavy, but surprisingly extracted in the mouth, with a lot of tannin. Very savory and long, with a growing bitter note in the finish. Better with food than a solo sipper. — a day ago

Marqués de la Concordia

Reserva Rioja Tempranillo 2006

Classy blue label on a bottle with a raised glass stamp. Dark as it gets for Rioja. And no sign of oxidation what so ever. Smells fresh and sassy. Sarsaparilla and berries. Flavors are balanced and herbal. Dry, tasty, and pleasing. It’s complex with a woodsy pine needles and tamarack bark zing to match the cherry cordial. This has aged amazingly and has loads of intertwined flavors 14 years in. — 2 days ago

Marqués de Murrieta

Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2007

Regal. Quiet quality. Nose is big - suggesting high alcohol, with spice, earth, and figs. The palate is satin smooth, med bodied, with powdery tannins binding the primary blackcurrant and dark cherry fruit. Classic power without weight. A twist of fig at the back end. Glorious with Ottolenghi spiced lamb. Yes. — 11 days ago

Suertes del Marqués

Vidonia Viñas Viejas Valle de la Orotava Listan Blanco 2012

Served double blind, the color was a brilliant, deep gold color and the bouquet was a touch wild with dried stone fruits and toasted almonds. On the palate, this came across quite fresh…and tropical! The predominate fruit character reminded me of dragon fruit a touch of lemon and an undeniable maritime influence in the form of ocean spray. The finish is bone dry and there is generous acidity. I actually found this to be even somewhat tannic? I figured there was a non-interventionalist approach to the winemaking. Regardless, I loved whatever this was despite really struggling to place it. Clearly, this was made in a more oxidative style but it didn’t really strike me as a Rioja. When this was revealed, I got really excited. I had never tried one of Luis Seabra’s wines before and now everything made sense. What a treat. Need more of this in my life! 100% Listán Blanco from vines over a century old. — 7 days ago

I think this wine comes from Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

@Bob McDonald you’re absolutely right! That’s what excited me. But now looking back, I wasn’t very clear I guess.

@Jay Kline I once bought some Listan Blanco and also some Listan Negro. I found them to be good value and quite mineral seeing as those islands are basically old volcanoes. I hope you enjoy the remainder of your collection.

Marqués de Los Rios

Blanco Reserva Rioja 2016

What a terrific white Rioja this is! Bottled by Morrisons and produced by Baron de Ley, though I strongly suspect this is the ‘Tres Viñas’ Reserva that they themselves bottle.

Aromas of nectarine, honey, caramel and vanilla. There is an element of petrichor / wet gravel on the palate that adds a refreshing quality. Medium acidity. Very full bodied, but not rich - has a strong minerality. Incredibly well balanced and long.

Marqués de Riscal

Herederos del Marques de Riscal Reserva Rioja Tempranillo 2014

Had a ‘14 in my cellar, aged very well for an inexpensive wine. Deep Ruby with dark edges. Aromas of berry fruit, complex spice, a touch earthy. On the palate, ripe Cherry and blackberry fruits with sweet and peppery spice. Nice approachable tannins that opened up quickly. Good balance and good length. Very Nice. Consistent quality. — 12 days ago

Marqués del Atrio

Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Graciano 2015

This is a very tasty 5 years old Rioja. Showing black fruits with earth, cedar, spices, vanilla, licorice, green olives, peppercorn, dark coffee, black tea and dark chocolates.

Dry on the palate with medium plus acidity. Showing a great aromatic nose.

Nice tangy finish with round tannins and tangy pomegranates.

Good right out of the bottle and better after 90 minutes of airtime. Would benefit from another 5 years of bottle time.

Nicely balanced with a nice mouthfeel.

I paired it with a big piece of steak.

A blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano. Aged for 24 months in oak barrels.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

89 points.
