The 2019 Mâcon La Roche Vineuse Vieilles Vignes is completely barrel fermented; however, since ‘03 Merlin has utilised less new oak, currently using around 10-15%. The 2019 is well-defined on the nose with hints of white flowers and orange blossom. The palate is quite spicy and peppery, a powerful Mâcon with just a light touch of honey towards the finish. Very fine. (Neal Martin, Vinous, November 2021)

2022/5/28 with tai sashimi 2 ways, tomato in dashi, chicken and new onion in pea and white miso soup, etc. There may be some bias since I’ve been looking for bottles like this since being reminded of how good classicist white Burgundy is with Kyoto food, but this really did it, and even more so considering the price. Savory, salty minerals, butter and citrus, the requisite oak, some honey from maturity - it all just works. — 2 years ago

Brilliant yellow-gold color. Aromas of pineapple, mango, apple and vanilla. Bright yellow delicious apple leads the palate along with hints of honey and savory spices. Nice mouthfeel and some noticeable vanilla on the medium-long finish. Texture is slightly creamy/syrupy and there is some noticeable RS. — 4 months ago
Iron fist with a velvet glove. Delicate flavors of lemon peel and crushed stones, with lanolin texture, fullish body, refreshing freshness, and long finish. — 3 years ago

@Delectable Wine - This is not a “white blend”; it’s Chardonnay.
This is high-level Macon. Nose has wonderful fruit with notes of apple, pear, and even peach, drizzled over stones plucked from a cool mountain stream. How’s that for imagery, huh? Also a very subtle toasty, buttery note that suggests barrel fermentation. I have no idea whether it is or not (probably not), but it is what it is. In the mouth the balance is very nice, with acids, stony minerals, and a bit of pure stone fruit in equal measure. Love this. — 24 days ago
