Art Series Margaret River Chardonnay 2018

9.2

Richly textured with predominately ripe fruits and oak notes at this young age, but in a way that somehow conveys a sense of understated elegance. Enough acidity to carry the medium to full body.
My first of this iconic Chard from down under. And it did not disappoint.

Pierro

Vintage Reserve Chardonnay 2015

No formal notes - at an old friends unit at Main Beach for dinner. Always one of Margaret River’s leading Chardonnays - more in the peaches and cream Leeuwin Art Series style using riper fruit. Enough acid to carry this through to the latter part of the 2020’s. — 6 months ago

Les Perrières Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Chardonnay 2015

Pale to mid Lemon in colour. Smells like it could be lean - Lemons and white flowers but it’s quite fulsome on the palate with white peach and a saline touch. I have to agree with Tanzer’s note with aromas of citrus peel and wet stone. Sometimes I have a high quality Australian Chardonnay like Leeuwin Art Series, Bindi Quartz or Penfolds Yattarna and wonder why I would bother with a more expensive Premier Cru white Burgundy. Once I tasted this I could see where that extra $100 went. — a year ago

Art Series Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 1999

This was sitting in the back of my cellar and I didn’t realize I still had it. My worry that after 18 years in the cellar it may have turned were completely unfounded. Beautiful fresh fruit, gorgeous sexy nose with a silky long finish makes this wine worthy of a high rating. This is not your typical Aussie bomb — 4 months ago

This looks like the Chardonnay.

Xanadu Wines

Margaret River Chardonnay 2014

Pale Lemon in colour. More in the lean style for Margaret River as compared to the richer “peaches and cream “ style of Cuvées like Leeuwin Art Series and Pierro. The oak has been judiciously dialled back not to overwhelm the more delicate fruit profile of citrus and grapefruit. Finished off with crisp acid. Would have liked a riper fruit profile from this good vintage. Perhaps picking a little later? Tasted 29 weeks later on 1st December 2021. Developing nicely with sweet grapefruit, nectarine and pear. Xanadu still having a wonderful run on the Australian Wine Show Circuit. — a year ago

Prelude Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

2018 vintage. Very fine-grained tannins, good mix of fruit and earthier notes. Fresh blackberry, black cherry, cassis, black plum, decaying leaves, leather, cedar, a little fluffy, yeasty bit I could do without, stale sage, stale allspice. Much more Bordelais than Barossa. — a month ago

Good. Not as sumptuous as its big brother but very pleasant. Green apple skin. Candied lime. Some butter but just a hint. — 6 months ago

Vasse Felix

Heytesbury Margaret River Chardonnay 2011

See several previous notes. Aromas of roasted cashew - funky leesy notes - barrel ferment characters. A light delicate palate showing more citrus and grapefruit than stone fruit characters. Leaner than an Leeuwin Art Series and the peaches and cream style. Tastes way younger than 10 years old. An exceptional Chardonnay. — a year ago
