Leeuwin Estate

Art Series Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Tropical fruit, white grapefruit, flowers, sea spray, baking spices, Chantilly cream, green peppercorns, and hints of chalky minerals. Lengthy, smooth finish. Perhaps more aromatic with less concentrated fruit than the 2017. Australia once again showing its strength for super complex, outstanding Chardonnay without the Napa or Burgundy prices.

Worth noting critics rating this 94-98 pts. With the increased aromatics, I prefer it ever slightly to the 2017.

Penfolds

Bin 144 Yattarna Chardonnay 2021

2021 release at Penfolds tasting. A big and structured wine but with beautiful detail, complexity, and length. There is flint, smoke, rounded sweet lemon, caramel, and wet stone. Built to age but fabulous now. More structured than Kumeu or Leeuwin Art Series, but at Burg 1er cru price point, not great p/q for new world chard. — 2 months ago

Woodlands

Chloe Chardonnay 2012

See previous Delectable notes. Crystal clear pale lemon in colour. A lovely 10 year old Margaret River Chardonnay. Chloe is Woodlands premium Cru for Chardonnay. A funky nougat type note - lemons and nuts. Not as full as Leeuwin Art Series - more like near neighbours Cullen and Vasse Felix. This wine begs for seafood. Next night quite Citric. — a year ago

Prelude Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Tgis is the 2018 Leeuwin Estate Prelude Vineyard Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot.

On the nose is bbn lack cherry, blackberry, black currant green bell pepper, mint and earth.

On the palate is black cherry, blackberry, black currant, green bell pepper, leatherherbal notes, cedar and earth.

This wine is full bodied with a smooth mouthfeel medium + acidity and medium + fine elegant tannins that leaves you with a long red & black fruit earthy finish. Have a great weekend and please be safe and stay healthy. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

Luminosa Margaret River Chardonnay 2022

“Funky Road Medina”! Struck Match, smoky, nutty, leesy - somewhat worked. Too Lean on the palate to be a Trophy Winner for my taste. Light to medium weight palate - citrus and pink grapefruit with Medium acid. This wine was awarded the Trophy for Best Chardonnay at the Royal Queensland Wine Show about a month ago. From Margaret River but leaner than the other famous Chardonnays there like Leeuwin Estate, Heytesbury, Pierro etc. Not cheap at $100 per bottle. Will improve with bottle age. — 4 months ago

Not ready for prime-time just yet, but that didn’t prevent us from committing the felony.
Pale straw color in the glass links up with lemon curd and a hint of gooseberries. Robust acidity frames this up nicely. Finishes taught and with urgency. Drinking the best wines in the world can be a little like fumbling around in the dark. But with this, I can see in the dark.

Sounds like a great bottle and I would take it happily even if a bit early. Great writeup

Chateau Montelena

Napa Valley Chardonnay 2017

I made some great notes on Sunday and then lost them! Overall a delicate wine with excellent oak treatment to match the lighter fruit. Under ripe white flesh stone fruit and grapefruit with a minor toasty vanilla note. Many of my previous experiences with Cali Chardonnay were overoaked but this had great balance and thoroughly enjoyable. I notice some other tasters noted ripe Chardonnay fruit - certainly not in comparison to Leeuwin Art Series in my experience. — a year ago
