Hawk and Horse Vineyards

Red Hills Lake County Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

It's time for my #FridayCabernetfix. Here is a delicious Cabernet.

Dark ruby in color with a reddish rim.

Beautiful nose of wildflowers, blueberries, blackberries, light cedar, licorice, spices, black pepper, chocolates, dark coffee and earth.

Full bodied smooth and elegant, with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with blackberries, plums, blueberries, oak, vanilla, licorice, spices, tobacco, chocolates, light earth and peppercorn.

Medium plus on the finish with fine grained tannins and cherries.

This is a delicious Cabernet Sauvignon from Lake County in California. Drinking very nicely now, with nice complexity and a soft mouthfeel.

Good by itself as a sipping wine, and good with food. Will be nice to revisit this in a few years, and see how it evolves.

Good right out of the bottle, but so much better after 2 hours of airtime, when it becomes so aromatic. Loved smelling on it for a long while.

Grapes are grown on rocky red volcanic soil, at elevation of 2,200 feet. A blend of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit verdot. Aged in (80% new) French Oak barrels. 1800 cases produced.

14.3% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

Pride Mountain Vineyards

Napa County Cabernet Franc 2011

Fragrant blackberries and currants explode from the glass even at 10 years old. A bit more muted on the palate but presents a nice balance of black and blue fruits, milk chocolate and a bit of bell pepper. Finish has some tannic grip but finishes on a savory note. Drink up if you have any left. Pride makes some of the best Cab Franc in Napa (though the CF is technically from the Sonoma side of the property). — 16 days ago

Red Hills Lake County Petite Sirah 2017

Dark purple in color with a purplish rim.

Nice nose of black currants, plums, cooked cherries, sweet cedar, light earth, vanilla, licorice, cloves, spices, tobacco, chocolates, coffee and herbs.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity and smooth

Dry on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, cherries, wood, spices, vanilla, tobacco, peppercorn, espresso, chocolates, light earth and herbs.

Medium on the finish with fine grained tannins and cherries.

This is a very tasty Petite Sirah from Lake County. A nice sipping wine that doesn't need food at all. Easy drinking with nice complexity and a soft mouthfeel.

Good right out of the bottle and better with airtime. I gave it a couple of hours in a decanter.

This Single Vineyard is tasty, spicy and interesting. Really enjoyed the nose here.

Will continue to age nicely in the next 5 years.

100% Petite Sirah grapes where grown at 2,200 feet of elevation. Aged in (40% new) French Oak barrels. A small production of only 150 cases.

14.1% alcohol by volume.

Pinot Noir Wild Horse Valley Napa County 2006

Bryan was kind enough to share one of his original Pinots from 2006. Sadly the Vineyard was later sold to a financial buyer as so he had to move on. — 11 days ago

Beaver Creek

Horne Ranch Petite Sirah 2018

Black cherry, cassis, bramble fruit, blueberry, violets, lavender, black pepper, some stemmy/tarragon/tomato leaf/underbrush. You don’t find too many natural winemakers taking on bold reds like Petite Sirah, but I’m glad Beaver Creek does and has no qualms about going up to 14+% alc. The wine feels a little thin on the palate for a California Petite, but really over delivers on the range, intensity and precision of favors, especially for the <$20 price—and it’s from a biodynamically farmed single-vineyard (Horne Ranch, which seems like a pretty majestic place from the photos I’ve seen) to boot! Great with bacon-eggplant-cheese burger. — a month ago

Enfield Wine Co.

Heron Lake Vineyard Chardonnay 2018

Doesn’t bowl you over with concentration but Enfield is all about subtlety and balance. Green apple, pear, slightly bitter lemon finish, not a whiff of butter or vanilla or toast in sight — 11 days ago
