Omnipollo

Nebuchadnezzar Imperial IPA

Not a beer geek myself, but even I know this was extraordinary. While the nose is quite mild, the flavours hits you like a bus. Heavily hopped with a bittersweet balance, and a round almost-oily mouthfeel (only held back by some carbonation). Orange rind, lychee, grass, malt, and caramel comes to mind. Lingers with a little warmth, which gives it a great sense of robustness. Delicious, but perhaps a little too intense for me.

NB: Intensity seems to be a common theme in these Omnipollo brews. These guys sure take things to the extreme. Big fan, but definitely not for the faint-hearted.

Imperial Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2009

Quite pleasant with Pat’s steak ($75). Not sure how long it would cellar in SoCal closet, so glad we drank it now. — 22 days ago

George T. Stagg Limited Edition 128.2 Barrel Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

I’m not really a bourbon guy, but I’ve tried most of the ‘greats’. This was a very generous gift from a friend. I’ve had it before, and this was just as epic. It’s a stunning bourbon. Screw your Pappy’s, this is the real deal. There’s roses and floral notes at the start. A freshness you really don’t expect given the intensity of the alcohol (waaaay overproof) then an intensity of taste on the midpalate with all the caramel, and depth you’d expect of a great bourbon, but loads of complex secondary stuff. It’s a trip on the palate with a midpalate would be brutal in other hands given the alcohol level, but here it really sings. I’m a wine guy. This is incredible once you get over the shock of the alcohol. If you only splurge on one bourbon, for me, this is the one. — a month ago

Imperial Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2015

Striking a balance between traditional and modern Rioja, the Imperial Reserva is often the most compelling wine in the CVNE lineup; at least to my palate and this bottle is a perfect example as to why. Tasted double-blind, the bouquet is perfumed and very pretty with bright, delicious cherries, tobacco, dill and green olive. On the palate, the dark cherry fruit is generous and silky with sweet and savory spices. Wonderful texture. Sturdy structure. Deftly representing the best of both worlds, this is a serious wine that happens to be a crowd pleaser as well. I called this 2014 Rioja Reserva (Viña Ardanza if anyone cares). Wasn’t far off! — 5 days ago

Old Weller Antique Original 107 Brand Wheated Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Peach cobbler, caramel-apple, baked pear tartlet, pine nettle, sweet corn, dried red cherry, cedar-on-grill, brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, chilies, generous oak that includes acorns, crisp vanilla cookie make the nose. Hot initially, with oregano oil, cinnamon and tobacco. Revisit yields subtleties, including lemon oil, grapefruit pith, orange peel, arabica, eucalyptus, apricot, red chilies, Mexican cigar spices, and peppercorn dust. Cinnamon-oak builds to a crescendo of resinous might in a cloud of foundry smoke. Allspice appears with oregano following hot on its trail. Spicy and precise. #oldweller #weller #oldwellerantique #oldwellerantiqueoriginal107 #oldweller107 #weller107 #bourbon #kentuckybourbon #kentuckystraightbourbonwhiskey #genuineoldlinesourmash #oldlinesourmash #buffalotracedistillery #wheatedbourbon #kybourbon #frankfurtky #buffalotrace #antiqueseries — a month ago

Flashback Blueberry Maple Pancake Imperial Porter

At this point, I don't think Omnipollo's even trying to add a sense of intrigue to the beer names. It is as prescribed. Too syrupy for me once more, but it sure does pack a punch. — 8 hours ago

As always, it is as stated on the can. These Omnipollo porters are just plain fun, but sometimes too cloying for me. One for sharing. — 22 days ago

Sixpoint Brewery

Resin Imperial IPA

Deepest red amber echoes eponymously, chaos ensuing in its lofty-top curtain drop of ocean foam encroaching and Cyprus knee lacing. Pine nettle, maple flower, bruised banana and overripe pineapple. Cinnamon toast and caramelizing Vidalia onion aromas. There is an ocean brine and orange blossom back breeze. Heavier mouthfeel accents tastes of orange-honey, marmalade, resinous malts, bay leaf, oregano and nutmeg leading to grapefruit and kumquat. Pleasantly aggressive hops applied with sage leaves in this double ipa. #sixpointbrewery #brooklynbeer #nybeer #newyorkbeer #resin #sixpointresin #resiniipa #IIPA #doubleipa #dipa #indiapaleale #beer #bier #biere #birra #cerveza #cerveja #ale #ipa — a month ago
