Matinee Santa Barbara County Syrah 2023

Blend of five vineyards from two appellations in Santa Barbara County; Solomon Hills and Gold Coast; from Santa Maria Valley, Peake Ranch and Zotovich; and Drum Canyon from Sta. Rita Hills. Ruby color with aromas of red fruit, baking spice and earthy notes. On the palate flavors of raspberry and cherry with white flower notes and an array of spices. Fine dusty tannins, long finish ending with fresh fruit, spice and earthy tones. Nice! — 6 months ago

Presqu'ile Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016

A beautiful Santa Maria Pinot from talented winemaker Dieter Cronje. More fruit forward and powerful than the adjacent Sta Rita hills cousins. Smooth, silky, with a long finish, balanced acidity and a touch of smoke on the nose.

Fates' Lieutenant

Fiddlestix Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023

Fates' Lieutenant Winery Fiddlestix Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023, Santa Maria Valley, California

Light ruby in color with light intensity.

Strong nose of red cherries, wild flowers, currants, barnyard, light tar, vegetables, herbs, earth and milk chocolates.

Medium bodied with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with cherries, raspberries, red currants, black pepper, herbs, chocolates, spices, green tea and watermelon notes.

Nice length on the finish with soft tannins and tangy pomegranates.

This young Single Vineyard Pinot Noir from Santa Rita Hills in California is starting to drink very nicely now, and will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 7 years.

Nicely balanced and complex. Fruit forward and elegant. Soft and smooth. Tangy and engaging.

This Single Vineyard Pinot Noir is showing such an interesting nose for a Pinot Noir. Reminds me of Northern Rhône Syrah nose, but not as potent.

Easy drinking and good by itself as a sipping wine.

50% whole cluster Pinot Noir grapes were fermented with native yeast. A tiny production of only 720 bottles. Unfiltered and unfined.

13.2% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

$60.

Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir 2019

9.2

Nice to taste this Santa Maria Valley bottling alongside the Sta. Rita Hills one. Riper, darker fruits profile but there is still freshness here. Oak is more prominent. Earthier as well with light mushroom and tea leaf notes. Plush palate.
This is a more complex and deeper wine. But I prefer the Sanford bottling slightly.

Tyler

Dierberg Vineyard Chardonnay 2013

Really extraordinary Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay, drinking at its peak. Has started to take on wonderful secondary character, with lots of honeycomb, hazelnut, and toasty brioche showing on the nose and palate. That makes the wine sound a lot more decadent than it is, though. At its heart, like all of the Tyler Chardonnays, this wine is first and foremost a masterclass in focus and precision. Even at the ripe old age of 6, with its contours slightly softened and its flinty reduction tempered, this wine is still wonderfully, vividly alive, with copious lemony acidity and fruit that still leans more towards tangerine oil and grapefruit. That this is still so piquant and salty and mouthwatering and more-ish after 6 years in the bottle is a real testament to the quality and the substance of these wines. — 8 years ago

What a wine! It got richer with time in bottle. Just ripe lemons, intriguing basil and rosemary notes. Acid shows really tense, with a beautiful saline texture. Long. — 9 years ago
