Kitá, red blend, Santa Ynez Valley, CA, Vintage 2014, ABV 13.5%. The blend is comprised of 48% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Franc, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot. @kitawines
👁 It had a beautiful purple hue and vibrant notes of black cherry, blackberry, black currant, plum, violets, cedar, nutmeg, vanilla, leather, and tobacco. 👃 👄
I loved learning about the background on this wine and winemaker Tara Gomez, who studied enology with financial help from her tribe, the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. 💕 Tara has worked with iconic figures in the California wine world — such as Fess Parker and J. Lohr— and has traveled the world, honing her own unique style of winemaking that blends the best of old world and new world techniques. 👏👏👏 @tgomez805
This red blend is made of grapes grown on the Camp 4 Vineyard, purchased by the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians in 2010, when Tara was hired as head winemaker. 🍇🍇 The land was previously cultivated by Fess Parker, who had an influence on Tara’s budding career while interning at Fess Parker Winery during her enology studies.
The word "Kitá" means "Our Valley Oak" in the Santa Ynez Chumash native language of Samala. The wine is speaks to “place” and respect for the land from which it is cultivated. 🌎 🌳 Yields and production are kept small to promote sustainable growing practices and the grapes are harvested by hand and vinified with minimal intervention. — 12 days ago
Serious Super Tuscan expression. Massive nose. Black Cherry and boysenberry seem to meld together. Hints of vanilla and lavender too with Italian spice. . A complete mouthful. Medium acidity and tannins falling into place. An absolute joy to consume. — 5 days ago
From the wife’s stash. Surprisingly solid! Medium red color with slightly brown edges. Nose is lovely and more of a red blend than cab. The age really refined this and Bordeaux like flavors were pertinent. Lacked some depth and finish was medium minus, but I really enjoyed it! — 11 days ago
A multi region blend, fruit from Barossa, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Coonawarra and Wrattonbully vineyards, aged 12 months in both French and American oak. Deep Ruby with aromas of dark berry fruits herb and spice. On the palate black cherry and blackberry with notes of cacao, espresso and herb pepper. Vivid acidity, ripe fine tannins, long finish ending with vanilla oak and spice, very nice! — 3 days ago
This bottle is about 11 months after my previous review of this vintage. Pretty much the same review but the fruit has definitely become more pronounced. Still not getting much on the nose. The red and blue fruit shine, tannins mellowed a bit, structure is coming together wonderfully. This wine is about entering a great drinking stage. A nice 30min plus decant is recommended. — 4 days ago
Dark ruby coloration. On the nose, blackberry, plum, espresso bean, chocolate, earth, minerals, smoked oak. On the palate, rich and full bodied, blueberry, blackberry, plum, chocolate, vanilla, earth, with a shorter finish. Tannins are still strong, but not overpowering. After a few more years it will likely be even more delectable. 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% merlot, and 10% Cabernet franc. $85 at B-21. — 13 days ago
Wow this is great! The nose is made of meat juice, cedar, tobacco leaves, oak and vanilla, black currant and an earthy thing which is typical for pomerol in my mind. The palate is well designed with a massive acid backbone, a bright red and black berries note all along, a good width, a velvety mouthfeel. In the rear tannins kick in adding a dry layer which is stylish and elegant, and that carries on on the finish with black currant, some oaky notes too, a reminiscence of the meat juice notes that could be felt on the nose and a tiny bit of bitterness. This is a great effort, what a wine in this vintage! Served along a massive ribeye steak that had matured for 42 days... A pairing made in heaven — 9 days ago
Absolutely stunning. Opened and aired for 24hrs before tasting. Layers upon layers here. Fruit and tannins still here and was continuing to evolve and open when finished over 4 hrs. Really a beautiful bottle. What a treat. Still got more to show us at 23 years. — 5 days ago
It's definitely time for a great Merlot on this #MerlotThursday.
Dark ruby in color with a short reddish rim.
Great nose of black currants, plums, cooked cherries, cedar, vanilla, spices, espresso, cola, light herbs, peppercorn, pencil lead and earth.
Full bodied with medium acidity and elegant.
Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, cedar, vanilla, licorice, spices, chocolates, tobacco, mocha, earth, peppercorn and leather.
Nice length on the finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries.
This is a delicious Merlot based blend from Napa Valley. Rich, yet elegant. Fruit forward with nice complexity.
This 8 year old Magnum is drinking very nicely now. The fact that it is from a great vintage doesn't hurt it either.
Delicious right out of the bottle, and better after 2 hours of airtime.
Excellent quality. Will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years.
Thank you Barry for sharing this with me.
Good by itself or with food. I paired it with delicious lamb chops.
