Bear Mountain Bubbly

Odette

Estate Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

2021 vintage. So tasted alongside sister property Cade (and Plumpjack) Howell Mountain Cab. If I weren't so familiar with the Cade HM, woulda sworn this was mountain fruit. This is the leanest, dirtiest SLD effort I've ever had spanning a multiplicity of SLD producers since the 1986 vintage. It's got the underlying structure of Stags Leap District but none of the top layer of richness. It all got scraped off and you are just left with the steak-no sizzle. Comes courtesy of the old old Steltzer property (hadn't heard that winery name in decades and it was the durtiest in SLD!) and the new powers that be turbo-charged it and turned shizz up to 11. Fascinating and phenomenal. Light-medium body and has the color but packs an unexpected Barolo-styled punch. Not your average SLD bear. Watch out for Mr. Ringer...err...Ranger. 10.30.24. — 2 months ago

Medium magenta pink. Rather stinky on the attack of the nose with some dirty rocks and opened up with some ripe red berries. Medium acidity (6/10) and medium plus body. Great structure and balance on the palate. Even seemed a bit lively (bubbly) in texture. Layers of strawberries, melon and watermelon. Long finish. Quite a big Rosé, excellent work Mike! Drink till 2022. | Sample — 7 years ago

Dancing Bear Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2010

From magnum. Tasted perfect with so much fruit and balanced with some wood, spice, and good tannin. Felt like it was perfect and didn’t really change a ton over a few hours of air. Great celebration wine. — 7 months ago

Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

2017 vintage. Pretty solid stuff. Medium-medium heavy body. Dryer than your average Napa bear and tastes more like mountain slope fruit but don’t think it is. Underrated potential and QPR pop. This should be dynamite in a decade. — 2 years ago

Monthly WTF wine group night. Our theme was American oak vs French oak. All wines tasted blind. We started off with two bottles of bubbly and finished with two non-themed reds.

Similar experience to last having this eight or so months ago. Rich and powerful without being out of balance. Inky blue and black fruits, sweet oak and vanilla tobacco on the nose. The palate here was expansive and a bit wild (in a good way)...signature mountain structure, dusty youthfulness in the ripe fruits. Dark chocolate & plum on the finish. Delicious now but probably better in a few years!

@Ara Aslanian : Living in Fort Worth helps! If you are ever this way on the second Tuesday of each month, WTF will have a spot open for you!

@Severn Goodwin : Yes, especially the bigger style mountain cabs. Just so delicious!

@James Cahill : We all really enjoyed it and found it to be quite educational.

I remember thinking this one was quite young. However, definitely has it all together but I feel that this one needs another five years before starting to express some of its complexities that it is most certainly capable of expressing and it's older age. Very stiff tannic finish but oh man what a blackberry punch on the front! This one isn't going anywhere for the next 20 years.

Tears of Vulcan Viognier Blend 2022

New vintage, 46/44/10 blend of Viognier, Pinot Gris and Muscat. Honey golden yellow, very good clarity. Slight sulfite on nose. Dry, flavors interpolate between the Pinot Gris and Viognier. Didn’t pick up much of the Muscat. Moderate skin astringency on the finish (bear in mind this is an orange wine). Floral, linalool and passion fruit flavors. Give the tannins a little time to soften. Dry as the Gobi Desert, so pair it with something tasty. Cheese? Fries? Something… — a year ago
