As you open this wine you begin a trip to the arch of Italy’s boot. Although this southern, mountainous region has a few small vineyards under vine. The big red grape Aglianico is limited to the slopes of an extinct volcano Mount Vulture. Notes of blackberry, black cherry and wild herbs. Well-balanced and tamed. This is the “Arch” cuvée. And it’s quite a cuvée! Gorgeous nose. Deep, ripe, pure, spiced cherry. Also a subtle gravelly mineral note. In the mouth, it’s deeply flavored but has less fruit than the nose suggests and instead features quite a mineral streak. Very nice acidity propels it along and there a line of taut, fine-grained tannin. I think this is on the young side and will benefit from 2-4 more years. — a year ago

Strong head builder; just under cappuccino. Arch and aqueduct lacing. Dark chocolate ganache and espresso notes veil a burnt black cherry and dark rye bread nose. Black coffee and bittersweet chocolate grip the palate, with burnt pecan edges. A creaminess suggests hazelnut oil, cola bean, tonka, carob, and mildly, ginger snap. Easy to drink stout that doesn’t give in to superlative extremes. Lovely beer!
