Grange South Australia Shiraz 1997

Opened and double decanted several hours prior to service; enjoyed over the course of a few hours. The 1997 Grange pours a deep purple color with an opaque core moving towards a ruby rim; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe and tart black, red and some blue fruits: blackberries, raspberries, Fig Newtons, tobacco, purple flowers, cocoa, coffee, some mint and other green herbs as well as earth and baking spices. On the palate the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is so long and there is remarkable density. I would say this is entering its early drinking window, but just barely. I find these wines need decades to shed their fat and really start to strut. Regardless, this is delicious now with a healthy decant and should drink well through 2057 without breaking a sweat. — 6 days ago

Château Beychevelle

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

Fun bottle. Shed the fruit, turn up the scent and taste of a nice cigar, cedar wood, coffee, and scorched earth. Grippy finish. Still fairly tannic. — 4 years ago

Château de Beaucastel

Vieilles Vignes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Roussanne 2000

In a great spot. Appears to have really shed some baby fat, the sucrosity of the fruit diminshing and the mineral and tertiary notes coming to the front. Lavishly textured, great length, a wonderful accompaniment to an array of vegetable dishes. Pineapple upside cake, roasted nuts, cooked yellow plum, marmalade, garrigue, cruahed stones, yellow blossoms, marzipan and honey, cream, olive oil. — 3 years ago

Domaine de la Janasse

Chaupin Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2005

Deep dark reddish purple. Opaque. Medicinal nose. Notes of cherry kirsch, anise, herbs and spice. Very ripe fruit in the mouth. Hot. Like cough syrup almost. Needs to develop and shed the heaviness. Not my style of CdP. — 4 years ago

Les Montots Mercurey Pinot Noir 2019

2023/1. Still lovely, though it feels like the wines have gotten a bit bigger and darker in the last few vintages…perhaps they just a need a couple of years to shed a little baby fat… — 2 years ago

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

Wow. This guy shed its youthfulness within the hour after it went into the decanter. Evolved several times over the next two into a real treat. Dark fruit, cedar, leather, lavender. Scent geek stuff. Silky tannic grip emerged to frame dark fruit, tobacco/mint, a l’il spice box. This producer delivers every time for me. Quickly becoming my go to Bordeaux house. Awesome again. — 5 years ago
