Welcome Swallow

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia

Bolgheri Red Bordeaux Blend 2003

2003, decanted, no sediment at all. Beautiful color. The nose was incredible. So much vanilla, cigar box. Wish it had been a magnum. Shared by my father to welcome my son Asher. — 6 months ago

Niederhäuser Klamm Kabinett Riesling 2019

2019 vintage from magnum. Excellent example of the type with discreet, but welcome touch of sweetness. Nectarine, green apple, yellow apple, mango skin, rocks, honeysuckle, red pear. Great length, drank even better on the second day. This will definitely go the distance, especially in the large format. Thanksgiving 2021. — 2 years ago

Long Shadows Vintners

Chester-Kidder Columbia Valley Red Blend 2010

Probably a little less amazeballs than the 2009 that Obama served the French president when he visited the white house, but still fantastic! A rustic sage and anise note are quite interesting as it lingers long after you swallow. Otherwise, the cherry and cola notes from the cab play off the juicy strawberry and leathery/fleshy notes of the Syrah. Damn this is good! — 5 years ago

Seavey Vineyard

Caravina Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Popped and poured from a magnum; no formal notes. This is probably the third or fourth time I’ve had the 2014 Caravina and while it’s still quite primary, this is the best showing yet. Bright red and black fruits with tobacco, a whiff of bell pepper and some baking spices. Firm structure with grippy tannins. The acid is elevated but welcome, particularly since it helped to slice through the fat of the prime rib. Finish is long and satisfying. Drink now and through 2034. — a year ago

2018 vintage. Vacation wine!!!! Very welcome in the face of continued uncertainty after such a whirlwind year and a half. Tart cranberry, crabapple, unripe cherry, lime, autumn leaves, dust, black rocks, rosehips, tea. Great alternative for Burgundy lovers. — 3 years ago

Krug

Grande Cuvée Brut Champagne Blend

Krug is always most welcome, and Valentine’s Day is no exception. This is edition 169. A bit more yeasty and slightly less acidic than previous versions, to my taste. But if you like the Krug style - which we do very much - it hits the spot per usual.

My wife used to work with Fritz Hatton, proprietor of Arietta wines and auctioneer for Zachys. Fritz always says to have a half bottle of champagne waiting in the fridge in case you need a “midnight snack”, and I have to agree with him!
