Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2024

Thesis pinot noir Russian river valley

N: candied cherry

P: sweet cherry. Delicious. But boring. Bitter in open. Then better. Something manufactured tasting about this.

Vinous Obscura

Blaü-Ökör Austro-Hungarian 2020

“Kek Bika” on my back label rather than the “Blaü-Ökör” here and on Vinous Obscura’s website, this mystery red nevertheless matches the descriptions in every other respect. It’s strong evidence supporting a thesis I have yet to sell on the wine makers in my family: the tyranny of the French clones is overrated; nature’s mutations are an abundance to be harvested instead of flaws to be weeded out; and the wine market is due for the same sort of revolution that hit eating apples a decade or so ago. This wine is light, acidic, and yet fresh and fruit forward, bringing to mind raspberries, sour cherries, English hedgerow fruits (like gooseberries or elderberries or something that I, being only an occasional visitor, can’t put my finger on) but without being cloying. It finishes with a peppery kick that rivals the best Syrahs. I still have a long way to go to sell my grand thesis, but my skeptical Francophile wife is at least sold on this particular wine. — 4 years ago

Cruse Wine Co.

Nouveau Napa Valley Valdiguié

Reading new fiction tonight from my thesis group workshop.

Magenta hues. Bouquets and bouquets of fresh roses and raspberries. Straight up fruit perfume.

Fresh pressed blackberry juice, watermelon sour patch, strawberry jolly ranchers. Fruit forward with medium tannin structure, not too sweet. Aromatic.

Nice, but a little underwhelming.

After aerating and decanting for even 30 minutes, this red got a bit more complex on me. Started to taste a spicier kick right at the end, almost like a red bell pepper. Overall structure seemed to improve. Added a tenth or two.

Tornatore

Etna Bianco Carricante 2016

Scores are such an inadequate – though understandably consumer-friendly – way to sum up thoughts and feelings when a wine actually hits home, which is rare.

On the official scale of complexity, age-worthiness and such, this is above average. In my personal platonic ranking – it’s what I love about wine and as good as it gets.

Zippy acid with richness, lots of fruit and lots of savoury, presence on the palate without heaviness and a straightforwardness that reminds you it’s a drink rather than a thesis.

In short: 😍😍😍

Goldwater

Wairau Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2014

Gooseberries/grapefruit, subtle herbs in the range of tarragon, fine long acids, and very clean. Distinctive of pretty much every SB from NZ. If I ever get back into school, I'm writing a thesis on global consumerism of $20 NZ SBs.🤔 not much jump with age. I feel a slight of saline minerality in this versus a bitter fruity personality. A beautiful wine. — 9 years ago

Fontanafredda

Barolo Nebbiolo 2018

Testing the thesis that the ‘18s are early drinkers and ready already now.
Fresh & open immediately up opening. With time evolves. Bit but still shows ripe cherry with some wilted flowers. Classic. But there’s also some strawberry, a bit of wet, turned earth. Fresh & inviting.
On the palate this is ready immediately after opening. Not decant needed. Fresh, juicy tannins, perfect balance, nice depth.
This is really nice, already now. Not the best out there (vintage? Wine?) but really nice. Keep your ‘16s & ‘19s in the cellar and drink what ready now!

Teran

Pours deep, dark ruby with undercurrents if amber out of the bottle. On the nose: bandaids, lavender, potpourri, earth, lactic acid and cigar box. Mouthfeel is a bit weak at first, but not bad. Upon first taste, it’s a little wild: Black currants, yeasty with a touch of minerality, cutting acidity, stone fruit, tobacco, chocolate. After sitting, notes of tomato leaf and fruit emerge, tobacco remains, a crisp acidity and tannic structure come to dominate the wine, such that it resembles a pleasant—if humble—Chianti or super Tuscan found on the other side of the Adriatic. Over all, a great wine for a Monday night spent critiquing a thesis. — 8 years ago

Giacomo Conterno

Francia Barolo Nebbiolo 2011

An absolutely wonderful Barolo from Conterno. First time having wines from G. conterno, as far as I remember. Had with a perfect rare chianina beef florentine style steak.

If I could go back and time I’d like to redo my senior Econ thesis to better explain the difference in European and American wine list pricing at restaurants. This wine was sold for $30 less than the *release price* in the US. Really a lovely nebbiolo.
