Viñedos de Alcohuaz

Grus de Alcohuaz 2018

Been waiting va while to taste this wine from Pisco grounds. Helluva terrain up there. Lean, structured, minerals and I'm glad I have two more bottles — 2 months ago

La Rioja Alta

Gran Reserva 904 Rioja Tempranillo Graciano 2007

This is just an all around beauty. Youngest 904 I’ve ever had and could’ve used a little bit more time in the cellar but such a fun and extremely versatile wine. Takes me back to last summer sitting on La Rioja Alta’s tasting room porch over looking the beautiful terrain of Rioja. — 2 years ago

@Shay A I am right there with you. Every wine in their lineup is terrific. Since you love the 904, you should try and get your hands on some of Ramirez de Ganuza’s wine. Probably my favorite producer from Rioja. Believe their Reserva is still available on wine.com. So damn good

Bodegas Volver

Triga Alicante Monastrell Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Massive 15.5% smackdown from Alicante. Strong thick slow legs. Full bodied. The nose is earthy with white pepper, hint of black licorice. Palate is interesting. Quite silky, immediate attack is dusty, supposedly like the terrain (late revision: this note subsiding over time); then big fruit, the end is a tad candyish with very little tannic grip. I had this with a light meal. It would have paired better with steak, or heat spice. Great wine, but Vatan is better in this price range for Spain.

Voglar Alto Adige Sauvignon 2015

Stunningly good cool climate SB. Crystalline and pure, zippy and intense minerality. Great weight, styled like a classic Sancerre or Pouilly Fume. Long elevage. Chestnut and acacia. Vineyards sit on the slopes above apple orchards. Very steep terrain. Phoenollically ripe. Delicious. — a year ago

Hardscrabble Chardonnay 2013

Another win for Virginia Chardonnay. Heavy on the lemon citrus, tartness of a Granny Smith apple, and minerality of rocky terrain. A long dry finish that stays with you. I imagine this would be great in the summer with some salmon... — 3 years ago

Ü Pastine Portofino Bianchetta Genovese 2015

Very good, though perhaps past its prime a bit and starting to show a little less character than I'd like. A nice acidity to match it's sunny yellow hue, taste of lemon rind and citrus, medium body, with a lot of rocky minerals and terrain. It is nice to have a wine focus on minerality vs fruit forward compounds. Hope to score a bottle of this a bit younger next time. — a year ago

Télégramme Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2014

David T

On the nose, ripe dark cherries, blackberries, black raspberries, black cherry cola/licorice, pepper, medium spices, leather, underbrush, stones, crush rocks, very fragrant red roses and red dark florals. On the palate; the body is lean, medium soft tannins, black raspberries, black berries, dark cherries, cherries, poached strawberries, dry cranberries, black cherry cola, peppery, medium spice, tobacco leaf with ash, lean leather, light grilled meats, underbrush, gritty dark minerals, red roses and dark fresh florals, light presence of violets & good acidity. Nicely balanced finish and easy to drink young. Photos of their vineyard and large oak fermenters. Hard to believe you can farm anything in that terrain let alone vines, huh? 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 6% Mourvèdre & 4% Cinsault. — 3 years ago
