Benza Vineyard

Symphony Willamatte Valley Pinot Noir 2021

Dark cherry in color with a wide reddish rim.

Fruity nose of red fruits with light wood, spices, chocolates and light aluminum.

Medium bodied with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with cherries, red currants, earth, light wood, spices, coffee, tobacco leaf, dark chocolates and black pepper.

Medium plus on the finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a a very enjoyable Pinot Noir from Oregon. Nicely balanced with a nice mouthfeel. Feels like a young Burgundy red.

Easy drinking and good by itself as a sipping wine.

I gave it a light chill and paired it with cheeses and crackers.

A small production of only 235 cases.

13.8% alcohol by volume.

90 points.

$44.

Bouzeron Aligoté 2017

Nose has yellow apple peel, pear slice, straw and beach sand.

Palate has tangerine zest, ripe pear, under-ripe yellow peach, cold clementine orange with medium acidity and slightly dry finish.
A nice bottle; not sure if this wants more time, or a couple years past prime...

On the sold out (18K+ patrons) Lawn at Tanglewood this evening with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Our guest Conductor Ken-David Masur is leading a 90th birthday celebration of John Williams. BSO soloists tonight are J. Williams Hudgins (vibraphone) & Jessica Zhou (harp), joined by Yo-Yo Ma (cello), Branford Marsalis (saxophone), Eric Revis (bass) and James Taylor (vocals/guitar). A truly wonderful night lay ahead, and my money is certainly on hearing at least one or two Star Wars movements this evening...

@Severn Goodwin, I can remember buying this cuvée from KLWM In Berkeley 35 years ago, but haven’t tried it in awhile. John Williams — WOW! Saw him conduct a few different times at the Hollywood Bowl 25-30 years ago, lucky you, enjoy!!

@Doug Powers Because of JW's connection to the BSO, we actually get to see him conduct about 2x per season, minimum. Although last night was all about him not having to conduct, he did lead a movement from Superman and the theme from Indiana Jones during the encore.

An old standard in our household. Velvety smooth, rich juicy berries. Glad we can purchase Freakshow even at Costco in TX and have a solid, boozy Cab at the ready. — 3 years ago

Killer nose at 33 years young from an OK vintage. Chestnuts galore. tar, roses, melting road tar and crazy florals. Woodshop. Old Library books. Macerated cherries. Smells like elite Barolo. Just gorgeous. As it airs the minerals come through and the nose gets more and more expansive. I could smell this all day. Palate is tasting so young. Tannic and structured but with glorious cherry fruit and a mix of dried and fresh cherries. Very delicate yet big. This is so beautiful. Wow what sweet sweet cherry fruit and glorious freshness and acidity. This is terrific. Needs air as these all do. Nose now has burnt ember from a fireplace. Now after aid the complexity and finesse come in spades. It’s so elegant. The cherry fruit gets more defined. Now on Day 2 it has gotten better and better. These wines are timeless and ageless. Nose is a nebbiolo symphony with tar, dried roses, cigar box, dried cherries and huge minerality. So enveloping. Unreal chestnut. Palate is juicy and so clear. Amazing velvety tannins and so silky. Unreal wine. More finesse and better fruit clarity today. — a year ago

@Severn Goodwin I think we use delectable a bit differently. I am constantly updating my notes. They aren’t done usually till day 2. I taste the wines over and over again. My notes are living until they are finalized but I don’t announce they are finalized. The final version is in the offer. Hope that clears it up.

Caillez-Lemaire

Eclats Brut Damery Champagne Blend

No notes, a quiet celebration for my wife and me as I have successfully ticked another box in the years-on-planet category today. Feeling older...I think.

Cailleze-Lemaire Eclats, Lot No. 0514; A newer bottle than what was previously in the cellar. I'll capture notes on a future bottle. Palate seems a little subdued from prior lot, perhaps more time in bottle is deserved.

On the Lawn at Tanglewood this evening with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Our Conductor Anna Rakitina (BSO’s Assistant Conductor) is leading Elena LANGER (Figaro Gets a Divorce, Orchestral Suite), RAVEL (Piano Concerto in G) and ELGAR (Opus 36, Enigma Theme). The soloist for the piano concerto tonight is none other than Jean-Yves Thibaudet, our absolute favorite pianist (or piano-player as Emanuel Ax has been noted to say because he thinks the traditional term sounds funny when spoken), a never-to-be-missed event for us whenever he plays these hallowed grounds. (In 2004 Jean-Yves served as president of the Hospices de Beaune, factoid for any wine nerds who are also classical music nerds.)
