Stony Hill

Napa Valley Chardonnay 2011

This wine is testimony to great California Chardonnay that is also rare in style. No oak not malolactic fermentation. Hence the longevity. This 2011 is showing a bit of age with a deeper straw color than previous bottles from the same year. Still, only a hint of oxidation in the glass and on the nose. The pear and quince have evolved to a bit of caramel and butterscotch. Delicious to drink and I admit this might be the upper limit. I will drink remaining 2012 and 13’s in the next few months. — 5 months ago

Pinot Noir 2019

Pale crimson in colour - nearly transparent. Has that luscious mouthfeel typical of many Tasmanian Pinot. Great palate intensity. Cherry with some stemmy herbal notes. One of those wines where the pale colour doesn’t prepare you for the profound palate intensity. Only 20% whole bunches in the ferment which shows sensitive intuitive winemaking. Winner of the Trophy for the best Pinot Noir at Royal Adelaide and also at Royal Hobart Wine Shows. Incredible value for such a highly awarded wine: 6 bottles @ $39.95 each. Luckily I have 3 bottles left. Plan to have one each year - 2027, 2028 and 2029. I didn’t see this note and had another bottle 14 weeks later on 25th November 2025. This Pinot is a class act. — a year ago

SHV Napa Valley Chardonnay 2012

Delicate pale straw color. Tart Gala apple and pear. Crisp with balanced acidity true to the vineyard and deftness of the winemaker. This wine can keep going for years to come. Drank over three nights and final glass was no less, perhaps more enjoyable than the first. — 6 years ago

Spring Mountain District Chardonnay 2016

Napa Chardonnay made with neutral oak. Round and zesty, great because of how not Napa it is. The vineyards are also gorgeous. — 7 years ago

Wonderfully stony berries and floral notes. Who says Beaujolais has a monopoly on Gamay? The Loire can do it, too. And very well at that. — 7 years ago

Alsace Riesling 2021

Pale yellow color. Aromas of stone fruit, white flowers and citrus. Very interesting flavor melange of pear, lemon, orange and pineapple. Slight stony note on the long lasting finish. Very crisp acidity and an interesting slightly creamy texture. Elegant, fresh, crunchy and lively! Very solid for its price point. — 10 months ago

Domaine François Raveneau

Butteaux Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2010

The majestic 2010 Raveneau vintage. 2010 Butteaux is just electric after a few hours in the decanter, showing right at the intersection between youthful vigor and secondary character as it’s starting to develop that magical Raveneau waxy texture that comes with age. It’s deeply aromatic, layered and impeccably balanced between creamy yellow fruit density, stony Chablisen minerality and piercing lemony acids driving everything home. Raveneau is just in a league of its own and 2010 will be one of the best vintages ever for the Domaine and a true classic, terroir driven expression. My favorite since 2004. — 2 years ago

Napa Valley Syrah 2014

Perhaps my favorite from Stony Hill. Not as robust as their cab, but not pinot noir either. Some earth, raspberry, vanilla. Lovely on a winter's day. — 6 years ago

Love these wines. Clean and balanced fruit with well integrated, but not dominant oak. Not your typical Napa wine.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc White Rhone Blend 2020

Shay A
9.3

One of the bottles from my annual WWC hosting. I opened this as a side by side to a 2019 Saxum White as the makeup is fairly similar.

80% roussanne/ remaining a mix of Grenache Blanc, Clairette, piquepoul blanc, picardan and bourboulenc.

Nicely expressive at pop, it then faded and hid in a shell for a few hours before coming back at last glass. At 80% roussanne, I expected a more consistent expressive profile (honeyed tropical fruits, some orange) and for the acid to show a touch, but it was a roller coaster. More melon and light fruits vs bigger/more tropical. Medium bodied but not as rich as expected. It’s clean and shows some floral and mineral/stony nuances, but I’d spend the extra and take the Roussanne VV to get more complexity and flavor.

Les Tillets Meursault Chardonnay 2011

The south facing floral, pure and mineral 2011 Tillets is in such a good spot. It’s captivatingly aromatic with layers of honeyed white orchard fruit, lilies, toasted hazelnut and gun smoke. The palate is vibrant and so elegant with a crystalline purity, balanced citrusy acids and a persistent stony mineral finish. Excellent vintage for Roulot. — 4 years ago

Domaine Servin

Montée de Tonnerre Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2017

Medium yellow. Meyer lemon, lemon curd, yellow delicious apple, underripe white peach, sea salt, yeasty, briny, stony minerality, and hints of cheese rind. Tart citrus and high tone minerality on the palate. Elevated acidity, 12.5% abv, medium+ finish. Importer’s notes: From the right side of the Serein River, situated right next to the Grand Cru Blanchot. A soft and elegant wine, the Montée de Tonnerre is situated in the same line as the Grand Crus. The notable white clay helps to develop intense fruit and floral aromas. The older vines add the depth and complexity in the mouth. Regarded by many as the best and most consistent Premier Cru in Chablis. Lime-clay soils with Kimmeridgian fossils. Fermentation and maturing in stainless steel tanks. — 6 years ago
