Blanc de Blancs Charles Heintz Vineyard Chardonnay 2014

Shay A

In the name of science, a few champagnes/sparkling wines were sampled today in an effort to help a friend who is needing some samples/lab analysis done for comparative research. Hard way to spend a Monday...

It hurt me to open this as I knew it would be painfully young...and it was 😔. But, in the name of science, it was analyzed! Most distinctive out of the lineup. Straight up cream soda mousse. Definitely oxidative in style but not channeling any of those sherry like notes. This carried ripe tropical fruits and a touch of honeycomb, versus the ‘13 I opened a few months back that was completely open for business with marzipan & roasted cashews. Hold this.

That rosé was straight fire. Curious to try the BdB.

Bob's Ranch Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2016

Deep Ruby with ripe black fruit aromas and complex spices, aged for 10 months in French oak (45% new), on the palate concentrated flavors of cherry, blackberry and raspberry fruit with cinnamon and mocha notes in fine soft tannic structure. Well balanced with savory edge on a great mouthfeel finish ending with earthy mineral character. — 4 days ago

Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017

Yes! Believe it or not! leave the other vintages alone. Call Tom Parmesan and order at least three. Ripe fruit, balanced tannins and medium bodied. @Paul Treadway Huntington Beacher Bum @Shay A @David L @Jim Trobaugh @Jim Trobaugh @Shauna Summers @Jacqueline @Shauna Summers @Neal Schaffer @Ian Blackburn @Terri Walker @Terri Walker @Warren Sapp — 5 days ago

Hirsch Vineyard Pinot Noir 1996

Still Cali fruit, and oak was a little prominent to me, but this was remarkably balanced. And the maturing Pino characters (earthy, sous bois) were very appealing. It's also quite emotional to be drinking a perfectly cellared bottle of Burt Williams' last vintage while listening to stories of the man himself. Among the very best of America in my drinking history. — a month ago

Rita's Crown Pinot Noir 2015

Ron R

Our go-to producer these days is Morgardo. Never disappoints. Very opulent nose of kirsch, overripe cherries and a hint of blueberries.
The palate is intense and delineated. Made us think of melted chocolate in terms of texture. It’s powerful, especially since it tips the scales at 15.3% abv. This is a full-throttle, no holds barred, luscious Cali pinot. Not one for the traditionalists...
BTW, that’s my Parmesan encrusted chicken. Damn I’m good 🙂

Lauren Vineyard Chardonnay 2009

I had an ‘09 Aubert Lauren a couple years ago and it was drinking superbly....but now it has fallen off a cliff. The fruit is all but gone, there is a weedy muddled quality with notes of marzipan and petrol. Aubert chards are some of the best CA has to offer but if this perfectly stored bottle from @romo is any indication, they are not made for the long haul. — 2 days ago

I do not drink too many white wines over 5 years old. Besides sweet or fortfied wines are there ones you suggest past this time frame?

@Jesse Pender one producer that comes to mind immediately is Kongsgaard. I’ve had an ‘03 and an ‘05 that are drinking beautifully. The SQN whites are also funky good with bottle age are Haut Brion and Pape Clement Blanc. I’m sure others have additional thoughts.

Carte Blanche Chardonnay 2013

Tropical Chardonnay with great weight and density. Went well with Greek food. Nose of pineapple and honey and a touch of basil. Entry that is also very tropical and quite dense. Mouth coating. Didn't compete with the food like I thought it would, but instead really danced around the fare. Went best with the basil pesto hummus. Finished with more acidity than it started with. Aftertaste was kind of strange, almost like a tart peach. I truly think this wine needs to sit another couple of years before trying again, but it's still a very solid wine for the price point. — 10 days ago

Morris Ranch Pinot Noir 2012

Color of burgundy with some hues of purple. Nose of fermented cabbage, berries and spice, lavender note, and the nose is plenty. Taste is on par with nose, silky and polished, zest, sweetness, fresh berries, juicy grapes. The only complaint is a bit too much bitter. Aftertaste is also mellow, with nice berry and fermented cabbage note, almost no tannins and slight too much oxidation. She is a bit over her peak. Enjoy her now with slightly cooled bottle. — 4 days ago

Ramey Wine Cellars

Sonoma Coast Syrah 2013

Winemaking posts at Rudd, Dominus, Chalk Hill & Matanzas Creek, David Ramey & his wife, Carla began their own label in 1996. Rich deep ruby red. Aromas of powerful dark fruit, hints of pepper and sweet spice reminiscent of a Northern Rhône. On the palate raspberry and blackberry, soft and velvety, with smoky oak, big spice on the finish which should continue to develop for several years. Very Nice! — 6 hours ago

CIX Vineyard Pinot Noir 2012

Wow. This is really showing well. Decanted about 90 minutes. The nose is intoxicating; black cherry, black raspberry, cola, rich black soil, charcoal. A solid, intense core of fruit yet very well balanced. Really great stony minerals and firm tannins provide awesome structure. This will continue to get better with additional age. — 4 days ago

I will revisit these on your recommendation @Joe Lucca but they’ve always come off quite hot and disjointed to me. Maybe it’s my male menopause kicking in.

@Bill Bender I can’t vouch for all Aubert pinots, as I like you, enjoy his Chards more. I will say however that I’ve had this bottle twice in the last 2 months and it’s in a really nice place. Needs some time in the decanter. It walks the line of big bold brawny and elegant. Maybe try using this to wash down a dose of Estrovera. Could help with the hot flashes.
