Lauren Vineyard Chardonnay 2017

First of all, the pic is courtesey of my wife Vanessa (and it’s an awesome pic if I do say so myself). Lauren is always my favorite of Mark’s chardonnays, and this one does not disappoint. Telltale notes of honeysuckle, lemon peel, apricot (or some other stone fruit), but surprisingly no trace of vanilla (which I was expecting given how Mark ages his whites). The wine has a beautiful mouthfeel, is balanced, and a flavor profile reminiscent of the nose. The complexity that characterizes the Lauren chards after a few more years in the cellar is not there yet, suggesting that this has many years of development ahead of it. Could turn out to be one of Mark’s best chards in recent memory, so if you have a few of these I’d open one now and put the rest aside and see how they develop. — 6 days ago

After a couple months of hiatus, the Friday City Club group was able to get back together (albeit a smaller, more spread out group) for an epic hosting by @joe leatherwood . 1 sparkler, 2 whites, 5 reds and 1 dessert wine, all served blind.

I had this same vintage a little over a year ago and my note is very similar. I got a distinct hay note aromatically that I really haven’t come across much. It wasn’t herbal, but slightly more green and unique. Honeysuckle and honeyed stone fruits on the nose as well. Big and commanding on the palate and slightly more savory...lemon oil, sea salt and almond croissant. I called this 8-10yr old Cali chard.

Kosta Browne

Estate Pinot Noir 2013

My tastes have moved past classic Kosta Browne, so I personally enjoy this differentiated bottling. Out is the power of fruit, and in is a strong savory and spicy presentation. Tart cherries, vanilla (yes, for a Pinot), freshly cut spicy peppers, and baking spices. — 4 days ago

Estate Vineyard Fort Ross - Seaview Syrah 2012

Slightly cloudy. Olive, lavender, blackberry, gingersnap, deer blood, cracked black pepper, and cool saline breezes. Velvety tannins wrapping what is still massive fruit. Palette reminds you more of campfire than sea breezes. Absolutely perfect at this stage, with more years to give. — 7 days ago

UV Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018

Purchased based on Sam’s involvement with other projects that I have enjoyed, this is not my go-to style for a Pinot. It is more ripe and alcoholic (14.8%!) than I would usually purchase. I was told that this is characteristic of the UV vineyard. That being said, this was very enjoyable. It is a cab-lover’s Pinot as it is plush and broad on the palate. While it won’t be my daily go-to Pinot, I will definitely keep some on hand to fit the right mood and/or company. — a day ago

I was somewhat surprised to see this was a Marcassin, mostly because it seemed more elegant than my normal experience. It didn’t have that roasted marshmallow note I seem to associate with Marcassin. This was my favorite of the two whites...extremely aromatic with chamomile, honeysuckle, powdered lemon tart and orange blossom. Massive amounts of juicy fruit (which I associate with Peter Michael) on the palate...frosted guava, sea salt and lemon meringue. I called this 8-10yr old Cali chard (specifically Peter Michael Point Rouge).

Camp Meeting Ridge Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2014

Double decant and pour. A remarkable medium garnet color. On the nose: raspberry, floral, orange peel, spice, forest floor, sour vanilla cherry. Taste: A soft and elegant wine with raspberry-cherry, floral, some spice, smoked meat...leading to a vanilla mineral finish. Tannins mostly resolved...nice Cali cool climate pinot with only 13% alcohol. — 21 hours ago

Pax

Sonoma Coast Gamay Noir 2019

I’m going out of my way to drink more Gamay, and gain some understanding. Perhaps I should’ve reached for a benchmark Beaujolais instead of a hobby project of Pax. So I can’t tell heads from tails, but I can say this is moderately interesting. Very fresh, with savory aromatics—I guess from whole cluster inclusion—in greater concentration than the underripe red toned fruit. Palette is zippy and grippy, the tannins being most of the finish as the flavors quickly fall flat. This is a nice picnic wine, but I will try to stick to Syrah and Grenache when buying from Mr Mahle. — 6 days ago

Marcassin

Marcassin Vineyard Pinot Noir 2010

Some friends of ours brought this to our backyard dinner last night. This is not a producer I buy. So, it was nice to revisit and nice of them to share.

The first thing I would say, is this is a well made Pinot Noir. Having said that, I don’t buy it due to its pricing. If you are buying this from the winery, its price point is still too high for it’s quality and gets worse yet when you go to the secondary markets which, many do, due to its limited production & wait on their list.

I say this because I have had countless examples of Sonoma & CA Pinot Noirs that are as good for $75 or around that price point give or take a little. The Hendricks Pinot from Santa Lucia is a similar style and for me, is better than this Marcassin. The Hendricks is $75 on futures buying.

Our friends that brought it, whom we share a mutual friendship with another Sommelier. He told them they had to drink this as it was getting old. I can tell you that is simply not the case. This wine has another 7-10 years of fine drinking ahead. These statements happen when your consuming wine regiment is based on a steady stream of always drinking wines young...It just happens.

The wine shows beautiful mid & dark candied, floral fruits, heavy baking spices and too much cinnamon stick for me. Beautiful, dark, red, blue and purple florals. It is well balanced, lush, elegant, polished with nice round acidity.

A very nice wine just overpriced IMHO. You can do just as well for less and you would only lose out on the fact you are feeling good about opening a cult name Pinot for yourself or to impress others. Not a dig, just the wine psychology that experience has led me to through the devotion of studying wine and consumers feedback. Not all, but enough to call it what it is. I myself have fallen prey to those emotions & I’m sure will again.

Our 6000th wine on here and it’s a doozy! My first vintage helping make this. Beautifully balanced between dark berries, raspberry, loam, stems, bay leaf, potpourri & dirty roses. Reduced in a good way. Super terroir driven. Stoked to try this after 8 years! — 4 days ago
