River Stone Estate Winery

Kosta Browne

One Sixteen Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2017

Tried this twice. Pale golden color, complex aging, 34% new French oak-15 months, 30% stainless-4 months; 18% in Foudre for 9 months; rest concrete egg for 14 months. Aromas of stone fruits, oak, nuts, floral and spice. On the palate flavors of peach and pear with honeysuckle, integrated toasty oak and nice citrus tang. Long finish, ending with a wet stone mineral character. Outstanding! Will age well! — 12 days ago

Cape Mentelle

Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

Wine No. 6 of the 8 Cabernets we tasted blind on Saturday. The idea for this tasting came from Cape Mentelle who annually have an International Cabernet tasting at the winery in WA where they have the confidence to put their wine up against the best Cabernets in the world every year. This has all of the classic Cabernet descriptors of black olive, red fruits, cigar box etc. Ranked #6 of the 8 Cabernets we tasted on the day. Again needs to be cellared to realise its ultimate potential. — 2 days ago

Tough break when you score 9.5 and still only come 6th on the evenings rankings 😃

@Clive McNish That’s right Clive. There were some good wines there. To be fair the rankings for the tasting were judged on a consensus. I gave this wine 95 points but the consensus was 92.66.

The consensus was the average of 9 tasters.

Kistler Vineyard Pinot Noir 1998

Wow, you can tell this had some big fruit in its youth...because it’s still prominent. Nose has faded to a sour/candied cherry. Lively acidity wraps dark red fruits, figs, black cherry liquor. Nuts. Looooooong finish. Reminds me of a tawny. Definitely several years left in this old gal, which is wild. — 12 days ago

Fantesca

Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2018

One of (the only?) the only whites made by Heidi Barrett, this is a really great Chardonnay. No noticeable oak, which is my personal new requirement. Slightly sweeter than I remembered but very balanced with good acidity and minerality (I don’t care if this term is falling out of favor amongst the “experts”, as it still describes how a wine feels to me!) — 3 days ago

Ellen Lane Estate Chardonnay 2014

Time has not been good for this wine...i drank the same bottle 2 years ago and was better. The fruit component has receded and so what's left was buttery nutty but with a high alcohol level ... a mess should not have waited on it — 4 days ago

Lucie Bacigalupi Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016

I wanted something nice tonight. This was perfect. Winemaker Kurt Venge offers a Burgundian style to Sonoma. Red fruits and plush velvet finish. Definitely worth seeking out this off the beaten path wine. — 8 days ago

Cinder

Snake River Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2016

Bordeaux blend from Idaho. Very promising upon opening the bottle with strong cherry and spicy oak notes. Unfortunately I didn’t evolve and remained pretty much a single note wine. So hard to get a mature complex Cab from Idaho. — an hour ago

Toboni Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016

Reddish in color with a wide reddish rim and medium plus intensity. Very pretty.

On the nose bing cherries, blueberries, spices, light oak, light red candy, earth and black pepper.

Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity.

Dry on the palate with bing cherries, raspberries, blueberries, light wood, light earth, spices and peppercorn.

Medium plus on the finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries.

This 4 year old Pinot Noir from Sonoma County is drinking very nicely now. Nicely balanced with a nice mouthfeel.

Fruit forward and easy drinking with a spicy finish. Fun wine and very tasty now. Alcohol is nicely integrated by now.

Will continue to drink nicely in the next 3 to 5 years.

Good right out of the bottle. I gave it a light chill and had it by the pool. Paired nicely with a Double cream Brie cheese.

100% Pinot Noir grapes from a Single Vineyard. A small production of only 92 cases. Aged in 30% new oak barrels.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

89 points.

$45.

Normal service has been resumed.
In my opinion, this represents a benchmark in RRV chards.

Beautiful with six or so years in bottle...even better was the recent grab at $50.

Wine candy with cinnamon stick, nutmeg, dark spice, mixed darker fruit cola, some anise to black licorice, dark earth with dry top soil framed in a bright floral bouquet.
