Jungfer Erste Lage Großes Gewächs Riesling 2017

Another pleasant surprise! I did not place this in Rheingau as it wasn't the warmest of the lot. That said the group did identify this correctly, but in my defense, Prinz isn't really traditional Rheingau according to them. Another producer to look out for.

Peach, kiwi, white flowers, minerals, and lees on the nose. Quite fruity on the palate, even a touch sugary, but balanced by herbaceous and fantastic minerality. There's a real balance and finesse that blew me away, especially when the region was revealed. I've had Prinz before, but the producer never really stood - I guess they really nailed 2017!

Hallgartener Jungfer Spätlese Riesling

2007 vintage. Very good example of mature Riesling, despite its slight leaker status. Dried pineapple, overipe nectarine, quince, honeycomb, burnt lemon peel, apricot, jasmine tea, birch bark. Ripping acidity and ripeness, with very long finish. Good quality, though probably nearing the peak before its inevitable decline (caveat emptor: cork was not in good shape, though not surprising given its age). — a year ago

Young vin de soif. Most of the wines I'm drinking here in Berlin are young and fruity without much depth, even the Riesling. Let's see what comes.... — 3 years ago

Hallgartener Kabinett Trocken Riesling

A crispy zingy dry Riesling with the slightest finish of sweet apple and flinty stone. A great wine to drink cold on a sun warmed beach — 2 years ago

Goldstückchen Spätlese Riesling 2014

Had a taste of this yummy late harvest Riesling today from Rheingau at work as a deductive tasing session. Candied nuts, petroleum, beeswax, dried grass on the nose but the palate is awesome - minerality, ripe apricot and apple cider with medium residual sugar and light acidity. The viscosity is really nice coating the mouth just enough to get the balance of sweet and sour taste. Thumbs up for the Old World Riesling Spatlese 👍. — 7 months ago
