Santa Rita Hills Syrah 2021

2021. A little brett on the nose when opened which slowly dissipated over a few hours. I enjoyed the funkiness and spicy dark fruit with Greek marinated lamb chops. — 7 months ago

Bien Nacido Vineyard Syrah

Tastes like a cigar box smells.....in a cedar closet. Super bitter barky aftertaste, and dirty swig-from-the-bottle fun after two days open. Something amazing from Lompoc. — 7 years ago

Mr. Smith Syrah 2007

Wow this delivers. Must have some stems. Round tannins. Grip. But letting go at 10 years from harvest. Nose is complex. Fun. Finish is huge. Spike of acidity carries the mid pallet. 3 hour decant and counting only helping. Might be under rating this. Need. To. Find. More. — 9 years ago

So good. Such a pure expression of Syrah. Similar to the Piedrasassi Syrah from the same area. Give me sub 13% Syrah all day. — a year ago

Anika Bien Nacido Vineyard Syrah 2016

Outstanding Syrah from Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Maria Valley, a site Rajat Parr has been exploring for a number of years (some, in collaboration with Piedrasassi) to craft a California Syrah to match the northern Rhône best ones (if you've read Rajat Parr's Atlas of Taste, you know he's obsessed with Thierry Allemand). Lively, balanced, delicious. — 7 years ago

Rim Rock Vineyard Arroyo Grande Valley Syrah 2013

Very interesting Syrah from the central coast. Very vegetal and almost medicinal nose; bit of a canned black olive quality (not in a bad way). Full bodied, dark and deep on the palate. Nice. — 9 years ago

PS Central Coast White Blend

The 2022 Piedra Sassi Viognier from the Santa Rita Hills- to no surprise- is a remarkably rich and full-bodied example of the varietal from out west. The nose is a powerful blend of kiwi, limestone, and other deeper earthy notes that I just don’t have the vocabulary to describe. Lots there. What I CAN say is that the palate and the finish as well round-out in a sumptuous and gratifying fashion. Not easy to make a Viognier like this outside of Virginia. Piedra Sassi has. — 9 months ago

Bien Nacido Vineyard Syrah 555 2018

Needs hours of air. Nose of olives, ripe grapefruit, garrigue, and red Twizzlers. Palate is zesty and juicy with underripe fruit. Should hold this peak for some time but hard to imagine this being better in 5-7 years. — 4 years ago

Harrison Clarke Vineyard Red Blend

This is a 50 50 blend of Syrah and mourvedre, the latter of which was added because it doesn't ripen as quickly, a problem the growers ran into growing Syrah on their soil.

It's a very dark, opaque, purple wine. The aroma is full, raspberry, tar, rose petals, vanilla. It's really tasty, chalky and b vitamins (which I like), bright, broad tannins (if that's a thing).

PS Central Coast Sangiovese 2015

A touch funky on the nose, sour cherry and blackberry on the palate, quite tannic. As good as this is now, I might age it a bit. — 9 years ago
