This was the mystery bottle in our Super Tuscan tasting event. It was up against the 2016 Masseto, Ornellaia, Sassicaia, Solaia, Tignanello, and Redigaffi. This wine was outstanding. Probably one of the top 5 vintages of Insignia since 1994 in my opinion. Deep purple color, blueberry, blackberry, chocolate, some lead pencil and earth on the nose. Super smooth and elegant on the palate. Really well balanced fruit, tannins, acid. Long elegant finish of dark fruit and earthy with a touch of spice that lingered beautifully. We decanted this and all others about 2.5 hours prior to tasting. Second favorite of the night behind the Masseto which was a force of nature. — 5 years ago

Opened at least an hour prior to service. 100% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2016 pours bright straw color with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of fresh tropical and stone fruit: passion fruit, peach, white flowers, minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and steely. I live this with the uovo in camicia. Drink now through 2031. — 6 months ago
The Masseto Ornellaia is an exceptional expression of a Merlot, offering a beautifully balanced blend of power and elegance. On the nose, there’s an inviting oak aroma that seamlessly mingles with ripe, dark fruit—think blackberries and plums—with subtle hints of licorice and vanilla. On the palate, the wine is rich and full-bodied, with layers of dark fruit flavors unfolding effortlessly, underpinned by a velvety texture. The oak is well-integrated, adding depth without overwhelming the fruit. Its tannins are smooth but structured, leading to a long, lingering finish. Overall, it’s a complex, luxurious wine that evolves beautifully in the glass. — 2 years ago
An amazing wine with incredible complexity. Black currants, black plums, dark chocolate, earth, sawdust, cigar smoke, etc. It just keeps going on and on! Better than the 2001 Ornellaia I had earlier. It can be enjoyed for many years to come. — 3 years ago
Part of Super Tuscan Horizontal tasting. All 2016 vintage Masseto, Ornellaia, Sassicaia, Solaia, Tignanello, Redigafi, and a mystery bottle (Phelps Insignia). I got a lot of plumb and black cherry on the nose with a little tobacco and chocolate. On the plate it was soft, rich and balanced. Finished with some spicy notes. Very enjoyable, but did not stand out relative to others in the tasting, but that’s only because of the competition. — 5 years ago

Superbe domaine qui nous propose un vin de grande classe. Une robe cuivrée avec un nez doux de tabac, noisettes et chocolats. En bouche, une longueur très bonne avec une grande amplitude. Un final sur le cuir et boisé.

The nose has a dark core. Dark currants, blackberries, black plum, black raspberries, baked strawberries, baked strawberries, mix of purple fruits, raspberries, dark chocolate cake to mousse, dark spice, dry tobacco, oak barrel powder, anise to black licorice, some dry herbs, baking spices, black tea, withering & candies, dark, red flowers framed in violets & lavender.
The palate still has a bit of astringency to it. The very M+ tannins are round and meaty. Very dark currants, wild blackberries, both plum, black raspberries, baked strawberries, mix of purple fruits, raspberries, dark chocolate cake to mousse, dark spice, dry tobacco, oak barrel powder to cedar tones, anise to black licorice, mid berry cola. Sweet tarriness, some dry herbs, mix of Asian & Indian spices, baking spices-leads with strong clove, nutmeg, cinnamon stick & vanilla, caramel tones, just a touch of ground black pepper, black tea, dry tree bark, black rich earth w/ leaves, dry top soil, withering & candies, dark, red flowers framed in violets & lavender, beautiful acidity, well; structured/tensioned, coming into full balance, showing an elegant near two-minute finish that lands on fruit and earthy minerals.

Dark garnet with a jammy nose of dark plum and some oak and/or some light leather. Smooth in the mouth with medium tannins & acidity. Also a hint of fruit forwardness or more red fruit like plum and red berry. A very nice blend! Again thanks James- — 4 years ago

Magnum 2009 La Mission Haut-Brion. Very lean and structured. More austere than the 2015 Ornellaia white. — 7 years ago
