One Tree Cidery

Valdespino

Tio Diego Macharnudo Vineyard Amontillado Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Palomino Fino

N:Big petrol and varnish nose, caramel, to•bac•oh! A drawer full of secrets this.
P. Unctuous going in, liquid caramel, tree bark, smoky barrel, the sea.
Marvelous stuff from one vineyard ( Marchanudo Alto) rich in chalk, sometime under flor, some static.
18° watch out.
This from the Autumn Saca.

Gàbal Nero d'Avola 2018

McCarthy & Schiering, $15

Dark ruby, fairly opaque. Nose is a total fruit bomb with a bit of astringency. My mom used to have a black plum tree in the front yard where the plums would have super sweet dark plum flesh with a very sour thick skin. If you add a touch of cherry that's exactly what this wine tastes like. Somehow both sweet and very tart, full flavor and pretty high tannins, also has a noticeable alcohol bite. Still very nice, if maybe a bit one dimensional. I'm going to have to check out more Nero D'avola

Rocca Bernarda

Refosco dal Penducolo Rosso 2016

First time with this grape for me. A nice, medium bodied wine with black cherry and fresh Italian prune with its skin dusting. Is that dried orange peel? Something drying. This one is all about Septembers picking these plums from my parents' old tree in the garden. Nothing too complex. I like this. — 3 years ago

DeSante

Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

So, I found this app on my phone and I thought I would try it out ;). What can I say about this one? The average 9.1 rating is pretty solid. I would give it a little bit more though. 10 years old, Oakville, rather right on the money. Definitely not your dark blackberry 'napacab'. Has more red fruits... Raspberry, black cherry, a little bit of binf cherry, a little bit of herb, brambly. kind of felt like I was chewing on tree bark, but I think that was still the oak tannin that was surprisingly still present towards the finish. At 10 years, nothing seems to be precipitating out of this one. Really nice acidity from front to finish. Medium plus bodied. This is the only one I have of this particular wine. Can hold another 5 to 7 years with proper cellaring I think. — 4 years ago

Continuum

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2014

Tim Mondavi’s master piece! This is my 2014 Continuum. One word: FANTABULOUS! Sage mountain vineyard in 2014 was incredible for cabernet! This is the best cab Ive had all year! Who says you dont always get what you pay for? 225 dollars of pure ecstasy in a glass! Wow. Fig newton dipped in grape jelly on the nose. Dark berries fill the palate followed by black pepper and dark chocolate . It is as velvety smooth as it gets. The oak and tree moss come through on the finish with a slight tingle on the corners of the lips and cheeks. The finish is dry and lingers with even more complexity! Cigar box, mineral rich soil, Black licorice, and grape jelly again! Goodness. I have been waiting on this one for a long time and I am so glad it is as good as I thought it would be. I just wish I had someone to share it with!!! — 2 years ago

Weingut Josef Walter

Centgrafenberg Frühburgunder "J" Trocken 2007

Nose has ripe black cherry, blackberry, spring violets, vanilla, melted bittersweet chocolate and dry earth.

Palate has dried black cherry, ripe black currant, ripe plum, wet tree bark, molasses bread and under-ripe cherry, slightly tart with medium tannins.

Bottled under Stelvin closure, opened for slow oxidation 6H, then decanted 2H, more time appreciated. Notes to be updated.

24H Update:
Nose exudes ripe, sappy dark red fruits, just overrunning the Gabriel Glas, light (warm) molasses, brown bread dough and black cherry syrup reduction. Palate is crazy, all prior traits but with a sweet reduction and the acidity actually picked up. Moving this score from 9.4 to 9.5, likely one of the finest red German wines I've ever tasted. An equal to finely aged Burgundy wine.

Walter needs age then he can compete against everybody. But the age is critical.

Enderle & Moll

Spätburgunder Rosé 2018

David T
9.2

I’ve had Enderle & Moll Pinot but, not their Rosé. Bought this after seeing @Severn Goodwin post. I like it. It needs to get some air but, more importantly, it needs to cellar for another year or two.

The color is richer - darker...shows more time in contact with skin.

The nose reveals; bubble gum, juicy & candied; strawberries, black cherries, black raspberries, plum, raspberries & cranberry extract. Red liqueured cola, red licorice, herbal notes, limestone minerals, chalkiness, grey volcanics, candle wax, potpourri with candied florals of; dark, red, purple & blue framed in violets & lavender.

The body rich & full with high viscosity. bubble gum, juicy & candied; strawberries, black cherries, black raspberries, plum, raspberries, pomegranate & cranberry extract. Red liqueured cola, mix of red & black licorice, herbal notes, limestone minerals, chalkiness, grey volcanics, dark, rich soil, candle wax, tree sap with bark shavings, mix of dark & white spice (ginger), potpourri with candied, perfumed, florals of; dark, red, purple & blue framed in violets & lavender. The acidity is a picture perfect Hawaii waterfall. The long, rich, lush, well polished & balanced finish is persistent for minutes while falling onto perfect mid spice.

One of the few German producers & regions I trust with this varietal. Climate change will continue to broaden Germany’s scope of good producers with this varietal.

Love their Pinots, some serious values to be had.

Cantina del Pino

Ovello Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2012

My first time trying one of the wines from Cantina del Pino, an estate with greater ties to Barbaresco’s roots than most. The Vacca family were long a part of the Produttori but in 1997 branched out (yes, a pun: it was they who in the 1920s planted the now iconic pine tree on the highest point of the Ovello lieu-dit), and now produce two single vineyard Barbaresco bottlings (this, and an Albesani), as well as a generic Barbaresco and Langhe, Barbera and Dolcetto wines.

Tragically, winemaker Renato Vacca died in March last year after a yearlong battle with cancer. The 2016 vintage, just bottled, is supposed to be superb.

For now, though, the Ovello from the less lauded 2012 vintage. This is a knockout wine, still young, and with great promise. The nose is very exotic, quite heady & oaky even after a two hour decant, but opened up as the evening progressed, to give gorgeous aromas of macerated cherry, blackberry preserve, cinnamon, cedar and old leather. It screams Nebbiolo, and it’s the first Nebb I’ve had in a year or so.

The palate is very concentrated, with ripe and intense flavours of cranberry, dried cherry, cured meat and tobacco leaf. There is great tension and energy through the mouth, which only this village - or its neighbour - can achieve. The finish is long and impressive. A seductive, ageworthy wine.

D.R. Stephens

Silver Eagle Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015

David T
9.5

Tasted this at the property & bought three & three of the 14 Moose. It is even better than I envisioned at this stage and will only continue to evolve to something even more grand.

The nose shows a little paraffin wax at first with gentle, beautiful, elegant floral, ruby, ripe, fruits of; blackberries, dark cherries, black plums, black raspberries, plum, baked strawberries & hints of raspberries. A weave of faint; molasses, brown sugar & dark chocolate, some of the sexiest, gently layered baking spices of; cinnamon, clove, even lighter cinnamon & vanillin, hints of sweet tarriness, blossoming tree sap with a touch of bark, melted caramel, amazing, caressing, Marilyn Monroe, mid, dark spice, steeped fruit teas, limestone volcanics, a little dry, crush rocks, black licorice with gorgeous, candied, ruby, florals that are fresh & slightly withering; dark, red, blue that are set in violets & quiet lavender.

The body is wet, supple, rich and as good as it gets. She is flat out gorgeous with perfect viscosity. A little paraffin wax with gentle, beautiful, elegant floral, ruby, ripe, fruits of; blackberries, dry dark cherries, black plums, black raspberries, plum, baked strawberries & dry cranberries & hints of raspberries. A weave of faint; molasses, melted, brown sugar & dark chocolate, some of the sexiest, gently layered baking spices of; cinnamon, clove, even lighter cinnamon & vanillin, hints of sweet tarriness, blossoming tree sap with a touch of pine bark, melted caramel, dark cola, amazing, caressing, Marilyn Monroe, mid, dark spice with perfect, soft heat, steeped fruit teas, haunting here & there fresh herbaceousness, understated eucalyptus & mint, Christmas pudding over a touch of Christmas fruit cake, limestone volcanics, a little dry, crush rocks, black licorice with gorgeous, candied, ruby, florals that are fresh & slightly withering; dark, red, blue that are set in violets & quiet lavender. The acidity is simply insane. The finish falls into fantasy. It’s; sexy, gorgeous, elegant, round, rich, the definition of balance that persists for minutes falling on to a spice ending.

Most interesting Pinot of the year(s).

This will add a couple of points in 5 years.

The one is another bottling of Christmas Magic. Shots around the house on Christmas Eve-Eve. Yup, I even have a Wine Santa to enjoy wine with my Wine Snowman.

Merry Christmas Eve-Eve. 🎄🎁🎅❄️🌟⛄️

@Jason and Jennie Thank you for the introduction to DR Stephens. The 14 Moose is still better & will further stun one day but, their 15 Pinot is outstanding now. We will hold our other two bottles of their 15 another 3-5 years before opening. The first 14 Moose in 2026.
